| Chiefs May Have Been Offered Santonio Holmes by Joel Thorman on Apr 12, 2010 10:00 AM CDT in 2010 Campaign 45 comments
This morning I was reading Andrew Crocker's piece over at Arrowhead Addict titled, "YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME". The topic of course was Santonio Holmes and why the Chiefs didn't make a play for him.
Crocker's reasoning -- which I think makes sense -- is that Holmes, baggage or not, is more valuable than one of the Chiefs three fifth round picks. Now, we hear that it's very possible the Chiefs had a shot at making the Holmes trade.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports the Steelers called "everyone" about a Holmes trade. The process started on Friday, PFT reports, and no one else was interested.
Would the Chiefs be one of the contacted?
Let's look at this: The Chiefs have plenty of draft picks to surrender, have expressed interest in receivers and obviously have a need at the position.
My guess is they were contacted because of those factors and knowing he wasn't part of the "right 53", declined.
I know some folks might be upset over this but the Chiefs have placed a premium on character guys and a good locker room. Holmes fits neither of those.

| Theres a chance that Mike Williams is there in the fifth round. I would rather draft Williams than trade for Holmes. Also people thought the Cowboys got a steal when they traded for Pacman Jones. Holmes in no way fits the "right 53". This is the type of trade we could make in a few more years when we are already good(ala Patriots trade for Moss). I think the Jets got a steal and I like how they are building their team. But there is obviously something up if 30 other NFL teams weren't willing to give up more than the Jets 2011 fifth round pick. | |

| Report: Steelers were ready to cut Santonio Posted by Mike Florio on April 12, 2010 1:01 PM ET In the wake of the stunning decision to hand Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes to the Jets for a fifth-round draft pick, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers were prepared to release Holmes if they hadn't been able to trade him.
Per Bouchette, the Jets made the best offer for Holmes.
And that's not a surprise. Per a league source, Holmes was off many draft boards in 2006. Though Holmes vindicated the low first-round pick by helping the Steelers win a Super Bowl, his career in Pittsburgh is ending under the same cloud (literally and figuratively) that many had feared.
Still, we don't understand why the Steelers would hand Holmes to the Jets, given that the two teams compete for wild-card berths and/or home-field advantage. We would have taken less from a team in the NFC, like the Redskins, Giants, Bears, Panthers, Bucs, or Seahawks.
If, in the end, the Steelers could have only gotten a conditional cold turkey sandwich for Holmes, they still would have taken the deal. If he had been released, he likely would have made a bee line for Baltimore.

| Holmes is a good reciever. But alot of baggage. And another mistake could get him suspended for a year. So its just one of those High risk High reward type of things. I personally am glad we didn't take the chance. | |

| plus i agree with rust there are a few we can draft past the first who can be a number 1 in a year or two. i like what another poster said about the future with how ever we draft at WR being 1 and Bowe 2 cause i agree bpwe isnt a number 1 and never will be but he's a hell of a number 2 | |

| You can do more with less talented players with their head on straight than you can with talented guys in jail. | |
