Notre Dame WR Golden Tate caught passes from QB Jimmy Clausen on Friday and, according to various reports, turned in a solid showing.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was originally supposed to run the workout but ultimately didn't want to take the attention away from the players.
NFL folks like former GM Charlie Casserly of NFL Network are impressed with how he can help a NFL team.
"The first thing is when you watch him run after the catch .That's the number one thing he does, obviously he was a running back. The second thing is he can help you on punt returns so that's two areas he's positive in.
Casserly calls him "raw" on route-running but notes his feet are "good enough" to learn how to make the proper breaks in his routes.
"One of the things I was impressed with on tape was his instincts on the scramble. One of the things Clausen does well is move out of the pocket and keep vision down field finding the receiver. What does this guy do? He gets open consistently. When there's a scramble he knows where Clausen is and works his way back to him."
To me, this can't be understated. Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has a pair of pretty good feet himself and is an underrated scrambler. He likes to get out of the pocket -- whether that's a necessity because of the Chiefs offensive line or not -- and one of Tate's strengths is recognizing that and coming back to the ball.
Tate's positives include running after the catch, punt returns and adjusting on the scramble -- all critical areas for the Chiefs offense.

| Yeah he definitely would be a Welker like slot receiver here. I think hes more like Deion Branch though, Ironically another successful for Weis in the past(Welker never played for Wies though, just in his scheme). | |

| He was for a game or two. But I would rather use Lance Long or Urban over Wade. | |

| IDK... Bowe and DJ are kind of in the same boat.. they are too talented and primed to break out to trade because you wouldn't get what they are worth to the team. | |

| I think Bowe is miles ahead of DJ in a lot of ways. Bowe can be a superstar and even though DJ is my favorite player I think a pro bowl here and there is probably more likely for him. Now that being said there's not a thing wrong with DJ being that guy. | |

| It actually might be easier for DJ to be a Pro Bowl player than Bowe because I think theres more great WR's in the AFC than there are LB's. | |

| Hopefully Chambers emerging as the #1 receiver pushes him. Then again, his only success in the NFL has come when the was the second option. | |

| Share If Golden Tate Is A Target, Santonio Holmes Trade Helps Chiefs by Joel Thorman on Apr 12, 2010 7:36 AM CDT in 2010 Draft 8 comments
If Charlie Weis and the Kansas City Chiefs were interested in drafting Notre Dame WR Golden Tate, then a minor roadblock was just cleared.
The Jets, who had reportedly shown interest in drafting a receiver, just surrendered a fifth round pick for the rights to the Steelers WR Santonio Holmes.
This seemingly takes the Jets out of the running for a first round receiver.
Tate to the Chiefs makes a lot of sense. The Chiefs are in need of a receiver. They're also in need of a receiver proficient in getting open on broken plays and scrambles. They also need a return man.
Golden Tate fits the bill.
We haven't even talked about his relationship with Charlie Weis and how it would be a dream to play for him.
We don't know whether the Chiefs will draft him but we do know their chances of him being available just increased.

| Hes bigger than Deion Branch who I think he compares too. But he would play the slot like Wes Welker who is also smaller than Tate. | |

| I would still rather have Benn or Mike Williams who have the ability to be #1 receivers. | |

| I would like to have someone with #1 receiver potential too. I think that Bowe is a #2 guy in the NFL I think, and a very good at that. | |
