Read this morning we have an 86% chance of having the first overall pick for the first time in franchise history. Odds are Geno is the pick.

Yeah not sure if we want Freeman. He is a upgrade but not a franchise QB.

I feel like whoever we take with this number one pick will be considered a "reach" in someones eyes. So if you are going to reach then why not spend it on the most important position in all of football. A quarterback. I feel like unless you thing There is a Von Miller or Haloti Gnata in this draft (which I dont see personally) you have to take the best QB available.

I also dont feel like we can afford to take a LT at this spot. How many more games do you really think we would have won if we take Brandon Albert off this team and put Joe Thomas in at LT. Im betting we win 2 games again. We have to start winning games.

Dorsey just said in his opening interview that be believes in taking best player available no matter what the need. That kind of has me concerned. What if they decide that Jockel is BPA? Does Dorsey then trade for Flynn and continue the tradition of sifting through other peoples shit QB's? If this som bitch pulls a damn Pioli-Cassell deal i might just go ape shit bonkers!

AFC West notes
January, 14, 2013

By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

Sports Illustrated has reported that former San Diego executive Jimmy Raye has taken over as the vice president of operations for the Colts. That is the job Tom Telesco left to become the Chargers’ general manager. He beat out Raye for the job. Raye was with the Chargers for 17 years.

In a radio interview, Kansas City owner Clark Hunt made it clear the Chiefs would be open to trading the No.1 pick in the draft. That is not surprising, considering that the top talent doesn’t fit with the Chiefs' needs.

But it may be difficult trading the pick because of the lack of a top-draw quarterback and because there are several top defensive players available, so teams may not feel the urge to trade up because there isn’t a clear-cut top prospect.

Fox Sports is reporting Arizona wants to conduct a second interview with Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that McCoy is eyeing the San Diego job, which he is interviewing for Monday.

The Patriots have added former Kansas City offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He will start working with the Patriots, who will host Baltimore in the AFC title game, immediately. Daboll was unsuccessful in his one season with the Chiefs.

Chiefs will keep 3-4 defense with Bob Sutton's 'unique style'

By Joel Thorman on Jan 14, 5:31p 40

KC Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that the 3-4 defense is staying in Kansas City, which is good news to a lot of Chiefs fans who were concerned about the future of linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

Whew. Mark one concern off the list. The Kansas City Chiefs will remain with the 3-4 defense, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, who quotes Reid as saying:

Reid confirmed Chiefs would keep 3-4 defense: "This team here is invested in the 3-4, so let’s continue to build it and get better at it.’’
— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) January 15, 2013

I listened to Andy Reid talk on 810 WHB earlier today and while he didn't come out and directly say they would remain in the 3-4, he talked as if they would.

More: 3-4, 4-3 and the future of the Chiefs defense

"Bob Sutton was a big pick up from the NY Jets," Reid said on 810. "He's used to running the 3-4 defense. They do a few different things there -- not that Romeo's not one of the best in the business at the 3-4 as is Gary Gibbs, who I'm going to continue to talk to about being on the staff. We'll just see how that goes in the next couple of days. But those are good football coaches.

Oh, speaking of Gary Gibbs -- yeah, he might stay. Emmitt Thomas, too.

Sounds like 2 holdovers from old #Chiefs staff, Gary Gibbs (LB) and Emmitt Thomas (DB) have very good chance of working on Reid's staff
— Adam Teicher (@adamteicher) January 15, 2013

But back to the defense.

This is an interesting line from Reid on the new defensive coordinator:

"Bob brings you that unique style that the Jets did," Reid said on 810 WHB. "They bring everybody from the popcorn vendor on down. It's a crazy bunch, but he sure has a great reputation in the league."

Well now. That's interesting. The popcorn vendor, you say?

With the announcement that the Chiefs will stay with the 3-4, this should eliminate a lot of players at the top of the draft. This really only gives us a couple of possibilities. 1. Take Geno or Wilson, 2. Take Jockel after getting a FA QB, 3. Take Star Lotulelei after getting a FA QB.

I still only see option 1 being legit this draft! Will depend on what happens with Albert. We should start seeing some answers on FA contracts here soon.

I don't see anyone wanting to trade up to number 1 unless it is for a QB. If that call does come that just reinforces why the Chiefs have to take that QB.

Sounds like a plan to me! We will see what Dorsey and Reid think about it before long.

The Packers drafting so much defense lately says they weren't pure BPA, and same with the Eagles the last few years too.

I don't really keep up with the Packers but this a pretty good fanpost. Dorsey basicly has went BPA at a position of need.

"In the last several years, I don't think the Packers have drafted the BPA in the first round at all.

In 2008 and 2011, they struggled a lot on defense, particularly with getting sacks. So in 2009 and 2012, they drafted front seven – Raji, Matthews, and Nick Perry. Bypassing prospects like Crabtree, Alex Mack, Percy Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, Doug Martin, and David Wilson.

In 2009, Rodgers got sacked 50 times. So in 2010, they bypassed Dez Bryant, Devin McCourty, and Kyle Wilson to draft Bulaga. And in 2011, they bypassed Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick to draft OT Derrick Sherrod.

Looks to me like the Packers have been drafting STRICTLY according to need, at least in the first round."

I think when your a team completely depleted of talent, you draft purely best player available regardless of position. As you fill each position with your BPA and they begin to pan out into solid starters, you can start drafting for need being the players that didnt pan out or whatever.

Basically teams with higher draft picks almost have to draft BPA while teams in the playoffs dont.

Dorsey has been simply amazing at both drafting starters and adding depth to each position. Like the year they won the super bowl, the Packers had something like 14 players on IR. Thats just amazing really. Dorsey is gonna bring us great things here in KC.

Look at it this way though. Maybe he had those players higher on his draft board. I think for the most part all the players he drafted ended up being better than the players he "passed up" And why would you pick a QB in the 2nd round when you have a franchise guy and a sufficient backup?? Thats more money tied up in one position that you typically want to have. There is also a business side of football, you have to get the best roster possible while staying under the salary cap.

I think the selection of Bulaga over everyone else had more to do with keeping their MVP QB off the injury list than anything. If your star QB was sacked 50 times in one season, would you even think about selecting another position? Makes no sense..

I keep seeing mocks that have Geno going #3. Why would a team who's only glaring weakness is QB not select a QB that's good enough to be drafted top 3!?

I know right. People are so freaking stupid! Give us an OT Bob! That will solve a QB problem.

I'll be pissed if Matt Cassel is on the team. I'd also be very pissed if we passed on Geno Smith, and he went to the Raiders.

One thing I keep reading thats been pissing me off is people saying Geno isnt a number 1 pick..yet they have him going to either the Raiders or Philly..or another top 10 team.

If a QB is good enough to be top 10, he's good enough to be number 1.
