Quarterbacks

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

There is absolutely no way that this future Hall of Fame quarterback sees the open market. With that said, John Clayton is reporting that Tom Condon, the agent for Brees, is "baffled" at how slow-moving the contract negotiations are going.

The importance of re-signing the quarterback before free agency begins is about being able to save the franchise tag for a player like Carl Nicks or Marques Colston.



Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

The breakout star of 2011 will most likely be returning to the San Francisco 49ers for the 2012 season and beyond. Smith wants to be back and Jim Harbaugh views him as their quarterback moving forward.

If Alex Smith somehow hits the free-agent market, he will be one of the most sought-after players at this position in March.



Matt Flynn, Green Bay Packers

Any team that signs the Packers backup quarterback will be taking a tremendous risk. Despite breaking Green Bay's franchise record for touchdown passes in a game against the Detroit Lions in his only 2011 start, he is still an unproven commodity.

However, any team that signs Flynn will be on a fiscal hook and not have to trade draft picks to acquire his services. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed that the Packers will not place the franchise tag on Flynn, which was pretty much a formality at this point.



Kyle Orton, Kansas City Chiefs

Kyle Orton is the best of the "second-tier" quarterback market in the 2012 free-agent class. He might have upped his value with a decent three-game performance for the Kansas City Chiefs towards the end of the regular season. Expect a team that is looking for a stopgap quarterback to come calling this offseason.



Jason Campbell, Oakland Raiders

Somewhat of a wild card, Jason Campbell was mediocre as the starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders over the last two-plus seasons. It's hard to envision him getting play as a starter in the offseason, but he should compete in training camp as a veteran acquisition.



Josh Johnson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Much like Matt Flynn, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is an unproven commodity. With that said, he will come cheaper than the former.

Some believe that Johnson has a future as a starting quarterback in the NFL and you can expect teams to take a long look at that in the offseason. I really do like his skill set. Jim Harbaugh coached Josh Johnson at the University of San Diego...just throwing that out there.



David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars made a snap decision to release David Garrard prior to the start of the 2011 regular season. This decision was met with a great deal of skepticism from people within the NFL.

The former starting quarterback decided to sit out the season due to back surgery. He is a possible option for a team with a questionable starting quarterback situation.

Summary

This is probably one of the best free-agent markets for quarterbacks over the course of the last five years or so. With that said, it still isn't that strong. The possible entrance of Peyton Manning to this list will surely shake things up a great deal.

Taking Drew Brees out of the equation, you are probably looking at four starter-caliber players on this list. The rest are backups at best.



Grade: C+

Running Backs

Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens

The question with the Ravens situation is who they are going to throw the franchise tag at. Both Ben Grubbs and Ray Rice are set to be free agents.

I don't envision a scenario where Baltimore lets the heart and soul of its offense even test the market. Expect Rice to get the tag if an extension isn't worked out prior to the start of free agency.



Matt Forte, Chicago Bears

This situation is a little less clear-cut than the one in Baltimore. To say that Matt Forte isn't happy with his contract situation is an understatement.

The possible franchise tag might keep him in Chicago, but he doesn't seem to like the idea of that and has threatened a holdout.

If things go from bad to worse, there is a slim possibility that Chicago puts Forte on the trade market. However, the recent firing of general manager Jerry Angelo might strengthen the relationship between the player and front office.



Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks

I don't see how the Seahawks can even let Marshawn "Skittles" Lynch test the open market. He was, by all accounts, their best player in 2011. The Seattle Times has recently reported that Lynch is a "prime candidate" for the franchise tag.



Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns

There has been a dramatic shift in the situation with Peyton Hillis. The Plain Dealer has indicated that the Browns now want to retain the services of the running back after what was a contentious season between Hillis and the front office.

Him wanting to return to Ohio is a completely different story. If the three backs ahead of him on this list are franchised, Hillis will see his free-agent stock shoot up.



Michael Bush, Oakland Raiders

Despite the fact that the Raiders have Darren McFadden, they plan to utilize the franchise tag on Michael Bush. The four-year veteran from Louisville played extremely well as a starter in 2011, gaining nearly 1,400 yards of total offense.

Using the franchise tag could be a ploy to get a couple draft picks from a team looking for a starter. After all, the Raiders don't have a pick until the fifth round in the 2012 NFL draft.




Cedric Benson, Cincinnati Bengals

Past his prime and not really a starting running back anymore, Cedric Benson could still be valuable in a committee-type situation. He has probably played his last game in Cincinnati.

Summary

This is an extremely talented class of free-agent running backs that could end up becoming as thin as watered-down glue if the top players are given the franchise tag, which is expected. The situations in Oakland and Cleveland makes it really interesting, however.

If Peyton Hillis doesn't want to go back to the Browns, he will probably become the top open-market back by default.

Like I indicated above, the Raiders are planning on using the tag on Michael Bush. This puts them in a difficult situation. They are currently over the salary cap and cannot afford both Bush and Darren McFadden. One is probably going to be playing in another city come opening day 2012.



Grade: A

Tight Ends

Jermichael Finley, Green Bay Packers

It had been reported that the Packers planned to use their franchise tag on the talented tight end. Finley and his agent now plan to argue that he is a wide receiver, not a tight end, if Green Bay does indeed place the tag on him. The difference is about $4.5 million.

Finley led NFL tight ends in drops with 13 and struggled a great deal in the postseason. He does remain the No. 1 tight end on the free-agent market.



Fred Davis, Washington Redskins

Davis was suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse program. Despite that, the Redskins are still considering using the franchise tag on him according to Jason La Canfora over at the NFL Network.

I still think there is a strong chance that Davis hits the free-agent market, in which case his market would be mixed. There is no doubt that he has the talent to be an elite tight end in the NFL. The larger issue is those substance abuse concerns.



Jacob Tamme, Indianapolis Colts

Tamme played extremely well in 2011 under a difficult situation in Indianapolis. He had a myriad of poor quarterbacks throwing the ball to him as the offense struggled without Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark.

The Colts might be well-served retaining Tamme and releasing Clark if they want to go to a full-fledged youth movement. If not, there will be plenty of interested suitors.



Jeremy Shockey, Carolina Panthers

The enigmatic tight end is in the last years of his career, but had a decent 2011 season for Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. He caught 37 passes in 16 games while splitting time with Greg Olsen at tight end.

You might see a reunion in New York between Shockey and the Giants after the devastating injuries their tight ends suffered in the Super Bowl.



John Carlson, Seattle Seahawks

The former Notre Dame tight end can be a valuable tight end in the right system. It just won't be with the Seahawks, who signed Zach Miller during the 2011 offseason.

You can expect multiple teams to look at him as an upgrade from what they currently have. He had a career-high 55 receptions for over 600 yards as a rookie in 2008.



Martellus Bennett, Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had high expectations for him when they selected him in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft. He hasn't lived up to expectations, catching just 85 passes in four seasons as their backup tight end.

Still, some team will take a look at this physically gifted player on the open market. It probably just won't be Jerry Jones in Big D.

Summary

If Jermichael Finley and Fred Davis are off the market after getting franchised, this becomes an incredibly thin market. You have a combination of unproven talent and over-the-hill type of players. Making matters worse is the fact that the NFL draft is relatively weak at this position.



Grade: B+

Wide Receivers

Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers

U-T San Diego has reported that the Chargers plan to let Vincent Jackson test the free-agent market when the new league year begins in March. Maybe they are fed up with the contract stalemates that have come to define his tenure in Southern California.

He is an extremely talented receiver and is coming off what I consider his most complete season as a pro. One thing is for sure: There are going to be a ton of suitors. Consider the San Francisco 49ers premature favorites to land his services.



Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs

The good news is that the Chiefs are going to have a nice amount of money under the salary cap. The bad news is that they have two "elite" players to retain in the open market: Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.

It goes without saying that they are probably going to have to choose just one of the two.

Bowe is a legit No. 1 wide receiver. Just look at what he has done in Kansas City with marginal quarterback play. Jim Trotter over at CNNSI believes that Bowe is seeking a deal upwards of five years and $45 million.



Wes Welker, New England Patriots

At first glance when I looked at this free-agent market during the season, there was absolutely no way that Wes Welker was going to leave the Patriots. I still find the likelihood that he bolts from New England extremely low.

With that said, there is something to the idea that he might want to get out of Dodge following a lackluster Super Bowl performance.

If he is left to test the free-agent market, a ton of teams will be interested. You are probably looking at a short-term contract due to his age, however.

There are also questions as to whether he is a product of Tom Brady and the Patriots system. The Miami Herald is reporting that the Pats fully plan to use that franchise tag on him.



Marques Colston, New Orleans Saints

There is no doubt that Marques Colston is going to hit the free-agent market. I am pretty sure that the Saints will franchise Carl Nicks if Drew Brees agrees to an extension before the start of free agency. If not, their franchise quarterback will get the tag.

New league rules prohibit teams from utilizing the franchise and transition tags in the same season as well. This means that Colston will have a ton of suitors, driving up his price.

Some would conclude that Colston is a product of his system, but I couldn't disagree further with that. In my opinion he is a legit No. 1 receiver.



DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles insider Adam Kaplan believes that the Eagles will franchise Jackson and then shop him to interested teams in March.

This is taking a real chance depending on what their asking price is going to be for the enigmatic receiver. Either way, it is hard to imagine Jackson returning to Philadelphia in 2012, as it seems he has burned his bridges there.

With that said, Jackson is a No. 1 receiver in the league if he can get that head straight.

An ideal fit in terms of need and location would be the San Francisco 49ers, as he grew up nearby. Once again, character concerns will come into question when teams talk about acquiring his services.



Mario Manningham, New York Giants

The Super Bowl champions would sure love to retain the services of their No. 3 wide receiver, but I just don't see that as a viable option.

The Giants have some serious salary-cap constraints heading into the offseason and must address the Osi Umenyiora situation before anything else. Additionally, it would seem like Manningham wants to find a larger role on another team.

I am not sure that he translates to being a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, but he would be a really good No. 2.The New York Post indicated that New York is "unlikely to get into a bidding war" with Manningham.



Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills

Johnson is saying all the right things about wanting to return to Buffalo, but we will see how it plays out when he actually hits the open market. After all, their "marriage" didn't end too well during the 2011 season.

Johnson is an extremely talented receiver that has troubles with drops and seems to have a volatile personality. In a league that seems to be getting away from those types of personalities at the wide receiver position, his market might be thinner than most people expect.



Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts

It's hard to imagine how Wayne even got close to 1,000 yards with that trio of quarterbacks Indianapolis threw out there in 2011, but he gained 960 yards.

At 33, he probably isn't going to get much more than a two-year contract at this point, and I doubt he returns to Indianapolis. The better bet is that Wayne follows Peyton Manning wherever he goes or returns home to New Orleans as a cheaper alternative to Colston.

Either way, Wayne is probably going to find himself on a contender to end his career. He is probably a good No. 2 wide receiver at this point.



Laurent Robinson, Dallas Cowboys

This veteran receiver had a career season in 2011 and is going to get a huge contract because of it. I am not sure if Robinson was a product of the good play of Tony Romo or if a button just clicked.

I will say this: He looked to have a lot of talent in St. Louis a couple seasons ago. Expect Dallas to do everything in its power to retain his services.



Brandon Lloyd, St. Louis Rams

I will make a bold prediction right now: Brandon Lloyd will join Josh McDaniels in New England when the offseason starts in March. After all, he followed the offensive coordinator from Denver to St. Louis. I don't think it could be a better fit either.

Lloyd does have tremendous downfield ability, something the Patriots were missing in 2011. If he doesn't go to the Patriots, there will still be a lot of interest out there. Lloyd is a marginal No. 1 receiver for a bad team but a really good No. 2 guy for a contending team.



Pierre Garcon, Indianapolis Colts

Jim Irsay recently stated that the Colts are "clearly in a rebuilding stage." I am not 100 percent sure what this means about the myriad of different free agents that they have, but I would think they want to retain Garcon's services.

With that said, it is becoming increasingly evident that the talented receiver is going to test the market. He has had two really good seasons with the Colts and will be well sought-after in March.



Robert Meachem, New Orleans Saints

The future of Robert Meachem is definitely tied to what Marques Colston decides to do in free agency. If the Saints' No. 1 receiver bolts in March, there is a strong chance that Meachem re-signs with New Orleans. If not, I could see him bolting for greener pastures and more of a role on another team.



Plaxico Burress, New York Jets


Burress had a really good season for the Jets last season, becoming their best red-zone threat. With that said, he was just signed to a one-year contract after returning to the league following a stint in prison.

NBC Philadelphia is reporting that Burress "badly wants to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles," a team that went after him mildly during the 2011 offseason.

Another option is San Francisco, which was his second option before deciding to go with the Jets, who he perceived to have a better chance at contention.

Summary

This is the best wide receiver class in the history of the NFL—that really isn't in question. You are looking at a minimum of five No. 1-caliber receivers and 13 starter-caliber receivers on the free-agent market.

This bodes well for teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, who are definitely going to take multiple looks at each of these players during free agency.



Grade: A+

Offensive Tackles

Demetrius Bell, Buffalo Bills

Prior to getting injured and missing the final 10 games of the 2011 season, Bell was having himself a heck of a season at left tackle for the Buffalo Bills.

At 27, he is also entering the prime of his career. Pro Football Focus also graded Bell out as one of the best left tackles in the league when he was healthy. He will get a lot of play in the free-agent market and is heads and shoulders above the rest at this position.



Jared Gaither, San Diego Chargers

When healthy, Gaither is one of the best tackles in the NFL. The issue is that he hasn't been able to stay healthy at all. He missed 21 games in 2009 and 2010 before returning healthy last season.

I am not entirely sure if Gaither is going to get a long-term contract, but he will be a great addition for a team looking for an upgrade at left tackle.



Jeff Backus, Detroit Lions

The former first-round pick is well past his prime but is still solid in pass protection nonetheless. You are looking at a player that will fill the need for a stopgap player along the offensive line, but not much more than that.



Max Starks, Pittsburgh Steelers

He has been the "starting" left tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the course of the last seven seasons, which probably doesn't say too much about their offensive line.

I don't view Starks as much more than a marginal starting tackle in the NFL. I'm not sure how much play he is going to get on the market. It has also been reported that Starks tore his ACL, which could be a career-threatening injury for a player of his stature and age.



Vernon Carey, Miami Dolphins

Carey played reasonably well switching between the guard and tackle positions in 2011 for the Miami Dolphins. He continued to excel in run-blocking, while struggling in pass protection.

At this point in his career, lacking speed, I would conclude that Carey best translates as a guard in the free-agent market. We have seen this switch, with a reasonable amount of success, with other players in his situation.



Kareem McKenzie, New York Giants

The Giants are not going to retain the services of their longtime offensive tackle. This has more to do with his horrible 2011 performance than it does with their issues in regards to the salary cap.

McKenzie rated out as one of the worst pass-protecting offensive tackles according to Pro Football Focus in 2011.

Summary

There is maybe one franchise-caliber offensive tackle on the free-agent market (Demetrius Bell), and even he is unproven at this point.

As always, this is a coveted position for franchises around the league, which means that they look to retain top-of-the-line tackles. Teams are going to have to look at internal options as well as the draft to upgrade this unit.

Guards

Carl Nicks, New Orleans Saints

Nicks has been the best pass-protecting guard in the NFL over the course of the last three seasons, and his value hasn't been lost on the New Orleans Saints. With that said, there are issues in regards to contact between the All-Pro guard and their front office.

Nicks publicly stated, "They never talked to me at all about it really (last season), which I thought was kind of weird."

The Saints have a lot of things to worry about. Paramount is their concern to sign Drew Brees to a long-term extension. Marques Colston is also set to be a free agent.

Nicks is a San Francisco native, and his former linemate Jonathan Goodwin plays for them. The 49ers have the cap room and need a left guard. Do I need to spell it out for you?



Ben Grubbs, Baltimore Ravens

If the Ravens do not reach a long-term contract with Ray Rice prior to the start of free agency, they are going to have to franchise him. This means that Ben Grubbs will be free to sign with any team.

He is probably the second-best overall guard in the entire league behind Carl Nicks, which means that there will be ample interest in his services in the free-agent market.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome did indicate that retaining Grubbs was a priority, but that he needed to juggle that with other team needs.



Jake Scott, Tennessee Titans

A player that has started his last 120 games in the NFL, Jake Scott continually plays at a high level. With that said, he has regressed a little bit in pass protection over the course of the last two seasons.

He does seem to have a nice amount of football left in the tank, and you can expect the Titans to make a strong push to retain his services.



Adam Snyder, San Francisco 49ers

A player of multiple talents, Adam Snyder was playing center this preseason before the San Francisco 49ers signed Jonathan Goodwin. He ended up being inserted in at guard behind Chilo Rachal prior to the start of the regular season.

After Rachal struggled in the preseason, Snyder was back in the starting lineup at guard, and he was one of the 49ers' most valuable offensive linemen this season.

With that said, there hasn't been an indication whether San Francisco views him as its long-term answer. Additionally, I don't know how much play he will get in the market as a starter.

Summary

Not only are there two franchise-caliber guards in the free-agent market, there is also a strong likelihood that both will end up hitting the open market depending on how the situations play out prior to March.

Snyder, Scott, Mathis, Foster and Bell project to be starters in 2012 as well.



Grade: A

Centers

Nick Hardwick, San Diego Chargers

U-T San Diego reported last week that Hardwick is seriously considering retirement rather than returning to the NFL for a ninth season. This is a player that would retire far too early considering the way that he has played for the Chargers.

He cited the idea of having a healthy post-football life. If Hardwick does come back, he will be well sought-after in free agency. After all, he is currently in the prime of a solid career at the age of 30.



Chris Myers, Houston Texans

The Texans will not "break the bank" to retain the services of Chris Myers, according to the Houston Chronicle. This makes sense considering that Mario Williams and Arian Foster (restricted) are set to be free agents and the Texans have needs at tackle and wide receiver.

This doesn't mean that Myers isn't a valuable player for Houston. He was arguably the best center in the NFL outside of Nick Mangold in New York. If the Texans are unable to retain Myers, he will be one of the most sought-after interior linemen in free agency.



Scott Wells, Green Bay Packers

There is no way that the Packers can afford to lose Scott Wells in free agency. He has been one of the bright spots along a struggling unit, and they desperately need him to return in 2012.

The franchise tag isn't an option because Green Bay plans to use that on Jermichael Finley.

You also cannot expect the Packers to get an equal player for less on the free-agent market. He was graded the fourth-best center in the NFL in 2011.



Jeff Saturday, Indianapolis Colts

There have been no indications that the 13-year NFL vet and five-time Pro Bowl performer plans on retiring. Pro Football Focus ranked Saturday as a top-five center in the league, and he can surely still play at a high level.

It will be extremely interesting to see what happens next, but the likelihood that he returns to Indianapolis isn't too great at this point.

Rebuilding teams rarely spend the money to keep a top-of-the-line center on their team. I am not sure that Saturday wants to be part of that rebuilding process either.

Dan Connolly, New England Patriots

Summary

If your team is looking for a new starting center, you should be extremely happy with the number of starter-caliber players at this position on the market. By my estimation, that number hits double digits.

Look for the majority of these players to change cities as teams prepare to transition from the old guard to the new guard.



Grade: A+

Defensive Tackles

Rocky Bernard, New York Giants

Bernard has been consistently good throughout his under-the-radar career. This is a player that has started at least 12 games in each season during his 10-year career.

He is getting a lot more press due to playing for the Super Bowl champions.

New York is going to have a hard time retaining his services because of salary cap issues. Expect him to get a one- or two-year contract somewhere if it isn't in New York. A good rotational player.



Cory Redding, Baltimore Ravens

Another rotational defensive player, Redding will surely get a look from both 3-4 and 4-3 teams in the offseason.

Baltimore is putting more of an onus on getting pass-rushers and will probably let the free agent walk.



Shaun Rogers, New Orleans Saints


You can tell that this is a weak position in free agency if Shaun Rogers finds himself on the list. He didn't bring a great deal to the table for the Saints in 2011, recording just 22 tackles in 16 games. He might get a look from a team looking for a veteran presence up front, but not much more than that.



Brodrick Bunkley, Denver Broncos

Bunkley showed flashes after coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles in an offseason trade. He started 13 games, recorded 47 tackles and looked really good against the run. You can fully expect the Broncos to make an effort to retain him, but there is going to be competition there.

Summary

One of the weakest positions in free agency. There isn't one player here that teams can count on to be a major force for them next season.

Rather, you have a mix of over-the-hill performers and unproven talent. If I were a general manager, I would take a look at the younger alternatives such as Bunkley and Okoye.



Grade: F

Nose Tackles

Paul Soliai, Miami Dolphins

It is being reported that the Dolphins' switch to a 4-3 defense means that they are going to let Soliai walk. This is great news for 3-4 teams that are in need of a stout run defender at the nose tackle position.

A year after being franchised by Miami, the massive player performed extremely well in 2011. He will be able to go gap-to-gap, opening up lanes for oncoming pass-rushers. This is something that teams covet a great deal.



Aubrayo Franklin, New Orleans Saints

In 2011, Franklin expected to get a huge payday following three great seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. Instead, he had to settle for a one-year contract with New Orleans.

Many people credited Franklin's good play in San Francisco to the team's solid defensive performances in 2009 and 2010. This was perhaps proved with how strong the 49ers defense was in 2011.

This could worry a lot of people moving forward. I can still expect him to get a lot of play on the market, but it's going to be scheme-specific.



Sione Pouha, New York Jets

He was a key element in the Jets rush defense in 2011, and I fully expect them to do everything in order to retain his services.

There is even a possibility, however unlikely, that they place the franchise tag on him. Look for the two sides to come to an agreement before free agency starts in March.

Summary

This is an important position for teams running the 3-4 defense. In fact, most of the best defenses playing that scheme have a stout run defender manning the interior of their three-man front.

Look for all five players on this list to get some play, but the major attention will be placed on Soliai, Franklin and Pouha.



Grade: B+

Defensive End

Mario Williams, Houston Texans (3-4 OLB)

Williams seems to be a better fit as a 4-3 defensive end than a 3-4 outside linebacker. This doesn't mean that the former Pro Bowl performer doesn't has the skill set to play both positions...he does.

Williams excelled at linebacker, playing it for the first time in 2011, acquiring five sacks in five games before being injured.

Pete Prisco over at CBS expects Williams to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL if he hits the free-agent market. That doesn't surprise me considering that he is just entering his prime and isn't a scheme-specific player.

You also have to take into account that the Texans don't really have the $23 million to throw his way with the franchise tag.

If Williams hits the open market, you can expect at least 12 teams to get into a bidding war for his services.



Cliff Avril, Detroit Lions

The fact that Cliff Avril made less than $3 million last season is somewhat of a travesty. He was among the leading defensive ends in the NFL last season, both against the run and rushing the passer.

You are looking at a talented player that is going to turn just 26 in April. Avril wants no part of the franchise tag, which means that things between him and the Detroit Lions could get contentious.

They are not going to have the cap room to retain Avril unless he takes a smaller contract, which isn't going to happen. Expect him to hit the open market.



Calais Campbell, Arizona Cardinals

One of many young players that make up a really good young core on defense for the Arizona Cardinals, Calais Campbell played extremely well in 2011 by racking up 71 tackles and eight sacks from the defensive end position.

He is less likely to hit the open market than the two players listed above. Campbell seems open to the idea of receiving the franchise tag, stating, "if that's the worst case scenario, it's not too bad."



Robert Mathis, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are expected to try hard to retain the services of their stalwart defensive end. This might be surprising, but they need to keep some of that talent on defense.

The larger issue here is whether they plan on playing Mathis at defensive end or outside linebacker in their new 3-4 scheme.

The franchise tender for a defensive end is expected to be about $11 million in 2012, which could complicate things if he doesn't come to a long-term contract prior to March.

If Mathis hits the open market, you can expect of ton of 4-3 teams to vie for his services with some 3-4 teams looking into the idea of moving him outside.



John Abraham, Atlanta Falcons

It seems extremely likely that one of the most consistent pass-rushers in the NFL over the course of the last decade is going to be moving on from Atlanta.

John Abraham, who has recorded 112 career sacks, will have to take a pay cut from his $8 million 2011 salary in order to return to Atlanta. I don't envisioning this happening with so many teams looking for pass rush help.



Andre Carter, New England Patriots

The former San Francisco 49er and Washington Redskin revived his career in 2011 with the Patriots. Carter recorded 10 sacks in 14 games before being sidelined with torn quads.

This won't limit the attention that he receives in the open market because this type of injury only requires a couple months of rehabilitation. I fully expect New England to make a strong play for Carter, but he will definitely see free agency in March.



Jeremy Mincey, Jacksonville Jaguars

This young stud came up huge for the Jaguars in 2011, recording over 60 tackles and eight sacks in a surprising performance. They are looking to retain his services but should get a lot of competition if he hits the market in March.

Expect to see a lot of big money thrown this way considering the importance that teams put on pass-rushing ability.

Of course, Mario Williams is the big fish, but a lot of these players will garner a great deal of attention.



Grade: A+

Inside Linebacker

Stephen Tulloch, Detroit Lions

The former Tennessee Titan made the decision to take a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions last offseason and test the market in 2012. He could not have made a better decision.

Tulloch tallied career highs in sacks, interceptions, passes defended, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries in 2011. In fact, he is now right up there as one of the best inside linebackers in a rather strong market for that position.

The Lions are making it known that they are making it a priority to retain Tulloch on a long-term contract, but they are going to have major competition.

Already before the offseason has even started, the Philadelphia Daily News is indicating that Tulloch will be a primary target for the Eagles. That isn't surprising considering their struggles at linebacker. Either way, you are going to see a lot of interest in him this offseason.



Curtis Lofton, Atlanta Falcons

I cannot envision a scenario in which the Falcons let Lofton walk...he is the heart of that defense. He is seeking a $32 million contract over the course of four seasons.

If that is the case, it would seem that the Falcons are going to let him go.

They have indicated an interest in rebuilding the offensive and defensive lines. They also have Brent Grimes and John Abraham set to become free agents.

If Lofton hits the free-agent market, he will be picked up in short order.



D'Qwell Jackson, Cleveland Browns

Jackson had a career year in 2011, racking up career highs in tackles, sacks, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. He is also entering the prime of what has been a really good career up to this point.

Needless to say, there is going to be a lot of interest in his services this offseason. He seems interested in re-signing with the Cleveland Browns and wouldn't mind being given the franchise tag. So, there remains a small chance that he bolts Ohio.



David Hawthorne, Seattle Seahawks

He has been one of the most underrated inside linebackers in the NFL over the course of the last few seasons, and 2011 was no different. He anchored one of the most improved front sevens in the NFL with Seattle.

With that said, 710 ESPN in Seattle has indicated that the Seahawks are not going to prioritize retaining Hawthorne this offseason, which means that he will be looking for another club.



Dan Connor, Carolina Panthers

I am not 100 percent sure why Connor is getting so much play around the Internet recently.

He wasn't that great in rush defense for a putrid Panthers front seven last season. Rather, he struggled a great deal.

With that said, I do like the raw talent that the former Penn State star possesses, and he is probably the best of the second-tier inside linebackers. For its part, Carolina seems intent on letting him walk.



London Fletcher, Washington Redskins

Father Time surely has to catch to up this 14-year NFL vet, doesn't it? He continues to play with a nonstop motor and doesn't seem to have lost a step going sideline-to-sideline.

Washington expects to retain Fletcher and was just waiting for the season to end to sit down with him. After all, you don't let a player leave that has accumulated 100 or more tackles a record 12 times.

Summary

This is a talented group of inside linebackers. You are looking at about a dozen players that could start for over half the teams in the league.

For some reason, front offices don't seem to be placing much importance on the inside linebacker position, so many of these players are going to see the open market.

Look at San Francisco with Patrick Willis and Baltimore with Ray Lewis and tell me that this position isn't important.



Grade: A+

4-3 Outside Linebacker

Leroy Hill, Seattle Seahawks

A couple years removed from being one of the most talented young linebackers in the game, Hill proved his talents in his first fully healthy season since 2007. He recorded 89 tackles and four sacks, helping Seattle improve its defense a great deal.

Now he is set to become a free agent and there promises to be a lot of interest from 4-3 teams. There has been no indication that Seattle is looking hard at retaining his services, which means Hill will probably see the open market come March.



Rocky McIntosh, Washington Redskins

A sometimes-contentious relationship between Washington and their former second-round pick appears to be coming to an end.

They were not fans of his off-field activity during the 2011 season and made that known. Additionally, McIntosh just doesn't seem like a good fit for their scheme. He will get some play in the free-agent market because there is a nice amount of talent there.



Manny Lawson, Cincinnati Bengals

Lawson proved what many people, including myself, had already concluded. That he was a much better fit in the 4-3 scheme than he was in the 3-4 defense.

He moved from outside linebacker to the strong side and helped the Bengals improve their defense throughout the 2011 season.

You can fully expect Cincinnati to look at retaining Lawson, but it will be on more than just the one-year contract he signed last offseason.



Philip Wheeler, Indianapolis Colts

Prior to going down with three games remaining in the season, Wheeler was one of the best players on the entire Colts team in a disappointing season. He racked up 80 tackles and a sack while playing extremely well against both the run and in pass defense.

Indianapolis should make it a priority to retain Wheeler as he seems to be a fit for their new 3-4 scheme. If not, there will be plenty of interested teams.

Of course there are a few different exceptions: Lawson and Hill come to mind first. If Wheeler re-signs with the Colts, it will be to play inside in their new 3-4 defense.



Grade: D+

3-4 Outside Linebacker

Ahmad Brooks, San Francisco 49ers

After making a solid transition from a 4-3 inside linebacker with the Cincinnati Bengals to a 3-4 outside linebacker in San Francisco, Brooks made even more of an impact in 2011. He recorded seven sacks and looked much better than expected in pass coverage.

He has recorded 18 sacks in three seasons with the 49ers, but came on as more of a three-down player last season.

You can expect him to get a lot of play on the free-agent market, maybe too much for the 49ers to want to retain his services. He turned down a long-term extension offer back in December.



Jarret Johnson, Baltimore Ravens

Johnson has been a really good all-around outside linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens over the course of the last nine seasons. With that said, they are looking to get more pass-rush ability from the position opposite Terrell Suggs.

Johnson only has 20 sacks in his long career.

I can only assume that the Ravens and Johnson will attempt to come to terms on a short-term contract while they find a replacement through the draft because there are no in-house candidates to replace him.



Aaron Maybin, New York Jets

Probably the purest pass-rusher of the group, Aaron Maybin came through big time in 2011 for the New York Jets as a specialist, leading the team in sacks with six.

I am not sure how the market will play out for the former first-round pick considering there was pretty much no interest in his services last offseason after being released by the Buffalo Bills.



Anthony Spencer, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys had high expectation for Spencer to be a great complement to DeMarcus Ware at outside linebacker, but it hasn't worked out a great deal. Since being drafted in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, Spencer has been consistently mediocre. He has yet to acquire more than six sacks in a season and could be looking for a new home this off-season. With that said, a lot of 3-4 teams will be looking at him.

Jo-Lonn Dunbar, New Orleans Saints (played 4-3, but I project to be a 3-4 OLB).



Summary

You wonder why the 3-4 outside linebacker position is a valuable commodity in the NFL draft. There is never anyone on the free-agent market that a team can expect to come in and make a major difference.

With the exception of Ahmad Brooks, who has been pretty damn good for the last three seasons, there really isn't anyone of note here.



Grade: D

Cornerback

Brandon Carr, Kansas City Chiefs

With the likelihood that Kansas City is going to be giving Dwayne Bowe the franchise tag, it looks like Carr is going to hit the open market. That is not good news for fans of his in Kansas City as this probably signals an end to his career in Missouri.

He is, by all accounts, the best all-around corner on the market. You are looking at a player that can play both press and man, while continually shutting down opposing receivers.

Some question his ability to be a true No. 1 because of Brandon Flowers playing with him in Kansas City. I just don't see it that way. He is going to be one of the most-sought after free agents on the market.

You can expect teams like San Francisco, New England, Dallas and Tampa Bay to come calling.



Brent Grimes, Atlanta Falcons

As I mentioned before, Atlanta is making both the offensive and defensive lines a major priority this offseason. I am not sure where that leaves Grimes at this point.

He is expected to want a contract that mirrors his teammate Dunta Robinson ($57 million over six years). I doubt very much that the Falcons are willing to ante up that much for two starting corners when they have needs elsewhere.

They are thinking about franchising Grimes, which would guarantee him $10 million in 2012.

If Grimes hits the open market, you will see a lot of suitors for his services because it is hard to pass up a good man-to-man cover guy like that, despite a lack of consistency in 2011.



Carlos Rogers, San Francisco 49ers

No one, not even the 49ers, could have envisioned the success that Rogers would have after signing a small one-year contract with them last offseason.

He was one of the best cover corners in the entire NFL. When I say one of the best, I am not exaggerating. He racked up a career-high six interceptions and had 19 passes defended in 2011.

It seemed like he was guaranteed to return to the 49ers just a month ago, but that has since changed.

He is seeking a four- or five-year contract, which would be stupid for the 49ers to offer considering the young talent that they have at corner and the possibility of signing a younger player in free agency.

After all, he would be 36 when that contract expired. If that asking price goes down, he will probably be back by the Bay. If not, you can expect some team to ante up that length of contract...it just wont be the 49ers.



Cortland Finnegan, Tennessee Titans

This is a player that you hate when he is on another team, but love when he is on your team.

Widely considered one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, Finnegan is still one hell of a corner. He is also still relatively young at 28, which is usually nearing the end of a corners prime.

The enigmatic player has not received a lot of press since accumulating 10 interceptions during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, but he hasn't really lost a step over the last two years.

For his part, Finnegan doesn't believe that the Titans are going to retain his services this offseason.

There does remain a possibility they throw the franchise tag at the talented corner.

If he doesn't return to Tennessee, there seems like three likely destinations: the St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.



Tracy Porter, New Orleans Saints

The Super Bowl hero of three seasons ago will definitely be allowed to test the free-agent market and probably wont be returning to the Big Easy in 2012.

He has become extremely inconsistent over the course of the last couple seasons, only recording 10 passes defended and one interception in 2011.

It isn't yet clear how the market will play out for him, but there seems to be some interest in Oakland.



Rashean Mathis, Jacksonville Jaguars

Mathis has made it readily clear that he wants to return to Jacksonville in 2012, but it I am not sure that the feeling is mutual.

He has regressed a great deal since a Pro Bowl 2006 season and is surely on the back end of his career. At this point, he is probably nothing better than a nickel corner on a good defense.



Terrell Thomas, New York Giants

The USC product and former second-round pick had a breakout 2010 season, recording five interceptions and 21 passes defended.

In an unfortunate event, Thomas tore his ACL during the preseason and missed the entire 2011 season. This cost him a huge payday this offseason.

The Giants are definitely interested in bringing him back, but it depends on how the market plays out. If teams are convinced that Thomas is ready to go, he might get priced out of the Giants' range due to their salary cap situation.



Richard Marshall, Arizona Cardinals

Marshall was one of those players who settled on a one-year contract during the shortened 2011 offseason...it might have worked out best for him.

He was extremely impressive for most of the season with Arizona after struggling initially. In fact, Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton called him their "most valuable defensive player in 2011."

He is looking at a long-term contract this offseason, with Arizona definitely in play. With that said, you can expect a lot of teams to be interested.

Strong Safety

LaRon Landry, Washington Redskins

By far one of the most talented safeties in the league, Landry has a quite confidence about him off the field. On the field it is an entirely different story. He is an intimidating force both physically and verbally.

Despite this, he has yet to make a Pro Bowl appearance and has missed 13 games over the course of the last two seasons. It goes without saying that there are injury concerns.

Doctors have concluded that Landry needs Achilles Tendon surgery, which has yet to be conducted.

This could put a damper on a large payday for the talented safety. It also seems to signify an end to his days in Washington as they are prepared to move on.



Tyvon Branch, Oakland Raiders

A real wildcard in the free-agent class, Branch played at a consistently high level for the Oakland Raiders last season.

With them planning on moving Michael Huff to corner (if he isn't released), there is added importance that the team retains the young safety.

The Raiders, who are on the verge of a salary cap purge after releasing Stanford Routt, might not be in any situation to get into a bidding war for Branch.

Free Safety

Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers

A lot of people have questioned Goldson's coverage ability on the back end of the 49ers defense, myself included. What cannot be denied is the fact that he is a dynamic playmaker.

He made his first Pro Bowl after a season that saw the safety record over 70 tackles, six interceptions and another 10 passes defended.

There are questions as to whether he is a better fit as a strong safety or his natural free safety position.

The rest of the league might not get a chance to get a good look at Goldson this offseason as he appears to be a prime candidate for the franchise tag.



Michael Griffin, Tennessee Titans

Inconsistent is the best word that can be used to describe the former first-round pick. Great one season and struggling the next...he has somewhat of a split personality.

With that said, Griffin has been pretty darn solid over the course of the last two seasons. He has also made it pretty clear that he doesn't plan on returning to Tennessee in 2012.

Look for a myriad of different teams to come calling, including the Dallas Cowboys from his home state.



Reggie Nelson, Cincinnati Bengals

Considered a downright bust with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Nelson has revived his career in Cincinnati.

He recorded nearly 90 tackles, four interceptions, two sacks and 12 passes defended in 2011. In doing so, Nelson proved himself to be a standout performer in the defensive secondary.

A return to his home state of Miami could be in the books as the Dolphins are already expressing a great amount of interest. You can bet that the Bengals will have something to say about that.

There are a couple of difference-makers on this list but it is hard to imagine teams planning to rebuild their entire secondary around individuals like Goldson and Griffin. Rather, they are going to be nice complementary pieces in a good secondary.

This list does go pretty deep in terms of players that can contribute and start on decent teams.

Grade: B-

Most league observers expect the Kansas City Chiefs to place the franchise tag on Dwayne Bowe which would make Brandon Carr a free agent (absent a longterm deal). Carr will be one of the top cornerbacks available on the market so there should be plenty of interest in him.

And one of the teams that's expected to show interest in him is the Dallas Cowboys, according to a report from Pro Football Weekly.

Sources have said the Cowboys would love for Chiefs CB Brandon Carr to hit the open market, so they can make a run at him. The expectation is that the Chiefs could franchise Carr and are said to be in fine cap shape, but they also have WR Dwayne Bowe to worry about. If Carr somehow makes it to March 13 unsigned, expect the Cowboys to go all in for him and worry about a high-profile guard (Carl Nicks or someone else) thereafter.

Rule No. 1 in free agency: Get the word out that the Cowboys or Redskins are interested in you and watch the offers increase. Now, I have no idea if the Cowboys reported interest comes from Carr's camp (I doubt it) but it does indicate that teams are going to want Carr.

And why shouldn't they? He's 25 years old. Four years of starting experience. High-character. Hard worker. He's big. Someone's gonna pay him a lot and I think he'll be worth it.

I thought it would be inconceivable to think that that Pioli wouldn't get one of Carr or Bowe signed before FA. Its looking like neither will sign and they will have to tag Bowe allowing Carr to walk freely. If this happens then fuck Pioli! Hes only had 3 years to prepare for this day. You dont develop talent that could fetch a 1st or 2nd round pick only to watch them walk out the door.

Yeah Brandon Flowers tweeted today that hes waiting for Carr to get his big deal somewhere because he was paying to take Flowers and Arenas on a trip out of the country.

And don't get me wrong, I think the same thing that happened to Routt is going to happen to Carr, which happens to a lot of free agents when they go to new teams. They get the big contract and don't live up to it at all. Routt was a GREAT #2 CB for the Raiders, he just wasn't a great #1... I have a feeling Carr is going to be the same way.

That being said we saved money then by getting Routt. Plus he might be better if Crennel wants a more blitzing style defense.
