| Chiefs Tried To Sign Kickoff Specialist
Headshot_tiny by Joel Thorman on Apr 7, 2010 3:23 PM CDT in 2010 Draft Comment 0 comments
A few weeks back we passed along a somewhat amusing story of a Chiefs coach (believed to be special teams man Steve Hoffman) working out kickoff specialist Todd Carter.
According to one account, Carter kicked a ball with 4.49 seconds of hangtime prompting a "Holy s--t" response from the Chiefs coach.
The Chiefs worked him out and, according to MLive.com offered him a contract shortly thereafter. According to the report, the Good Friday holiday delayed the deal allowing the Panthers to "get back in the picture."
The Panthers agreed to terms with him today. He graduated from Grand Valley State last year -- the same school as Chiefs CB Brandon Carr. Carr, by the way, is a childhood friend of Carter.
"I was just waiting for Carolina to offer the whole time, because that's probably the best way to get my foot in the door," Carter said.
Carter likely knew he didn't have a great shot at making the team in Kansas City because of Ryan Succop.
According to the MLive.com report, Hoffman wanted an opportunity to help him succeed.
"He really wanted to work with me, because he knew that I had potential," Carter said. "He's like, 'I want you to succeed. I like seeing stories like you, success stories of people from smaller schools doing good in the NFL.' He's like, 'Even if you don't make it here, I'll help you get on another NFL team, because I like you that much.' "
A bit of goodwill in a competitive industry like the NFL? Kudos to Mr. Hoffman.

| They've also shown interest in Marshall place kicker Craig Ratanamorn. There's not a whole lot out there on him. Here's an excerpt from a Scout.com article a couple months back. - Quote :
- The most important position to watch is ... special teams. An utter abomination a year ago, Marshall needs to work on all facets of special teams in the spring and beyond. The lone silver lining in 2009 was PK Craig Ratanamorn, but he's exhausted his eligibility with the program.
He's expected to be an undrafted free agent.

| Herm ruined LJ and Coluitt. Hopefully Dustin is able to get it back though. I guess I don't remember Succup on kickoffs... how far does he boot it? I would hate to waste a roster spot on a kickoff specialist though. | |

| He would have to be a hell of a ST's performer getting the tackle too.. like as athletic as the USC kicker that came out last year. | |

| If we dont waste a pick on one and if its just to compete during camp thats fine. But if we are trying to replace Succup then there is something seriously wrong with the Chiefs! | |
