Childress hired as Offensive Assistant

After two months of reports talking about it, Brad Childress is finally a member of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff. He will be an offensive assistant.

It was first rumored way, way back on January 9 that Brad Childress, the Browns offensive coordinator last year and longtime assistant on Andy Reid's staff, was visiting the Chiefs. In the weeks that followed, a number of folks predicted that Childress would eventually land with the Chiefs. He was with the Browns last year but it was unclear if they had released him from his contract to join the Chiefs.

By the time March rolled around, most of us had given up on the idea of Childress joining the Chiefs. But today, out of the blue, there's this from Adam Teicher:

Childress was with Reid from 1999-2002 as the quarterbacks coach and from 2003-2005 as the offensive coordinator before landing the Vikings head coaching job. He spent nearly five seasons in Minnesota before his exit, which then led him to Cleveland, where he was the Browns offensive coordinator last season.

Finally! Only took 2 months. Reid is shaping up a pretty good staff!

The Kansas City Chiefs finally hired Brad Childress earlier this week. But what the heck is his job title -- spread game analyst / special projects?

Brad Childress, who was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, has such a unique job title that the Chiefs felt compelled to explain what that is. The job title is "Spread game analyst / special projects" which .... I have no idea.

Here's what the Chiefs said about it:

Essentially, coach Childress will research and assist with the scouting and recruiting of the draft eligible players, prior to the April 25-27 event.

He will also conduct thorough research on the spread offense, benefitting not just the offense but also helping the Chiefs defense.

In addition to recruiting and researching, coach will also take on several other projects to benefit head coach Reid and his entire staff, with the collective goal in mind, winning.

Make sense?

It's the "spread game analyst" that has me intrigued considering the rise of the spread offenses in the NFL and that Alex Smith ran Urban Meyer's spread offense while in college at Utah.

Brad Childress is a good offensive guy..he helped develop McNabb. Definitely a good signing.

We have a first year OC, and a new QB coach. Helps with the offense as a whole, plus gives Reid more flexibility to be able to do his thing.

As long as he's not the HC he's great to have on the staff! Can never have too many guys who know exactly what Reid wants on offense.

Reid claims hes not going to help the offense or defense... hes going to be more of a guy that keeps track of downs, distance, play clock, and time..
