Matt Cassel Reportedly Suffers Cracked Rib

Chiefs fans hope the rumor isn't true that Cassel could be dealing with a cracked rib.

Sep 4, 2011 - If Nick Wright is to be believed, then Matt Cassel has suffered a cracked rib going back to the last preseason game -- a contest that also cost the Chiefs Tony Moeaki for the season among other smaller injuries. That means his status for the opening week contest against the Buffalo Bills might be in question. Everything is conjecture at this point and it's only a Twitter rumor, but it could prove more to the injury Cassel suffered where he said he simply got the wind knocked out of him.

If the rumors are true, it also exacerbates the quarterback situation for KC heading into the regular season since Ricky Stanzi is obviously inexperienced as a fifth round rookie who didn't even play the last preseason game. Tyler Palko is the only other quarterback on the roster, and no Chiefs fan can feel good about him playing any role whatsoever in 2011. Simply put, without Cassel, the Chiefs have some major issues on their hands.

Nothing is officially known however on this and word might not get out until after the holiday weekend from the KC offices. However, more sources should either confirm this injury soon enough or tell us that it's all a mistake. But if it's true, the Chiefs have a major uphill climb ahead of them.

Even If Chiefs Matt Cassel Has Cracked Rib, He Could Still Play Against Bills In Week One

Two things need to be stated up front. First, it’s just a rumor at this point that Matt Cassel has a cracked rib. Secondly, if true, the severity is not known at this time. That said, for those who instantly jump to the worst case scenario wondering what the Chiefs will do with either Tyler Palko or the Ghost of Dave Krieg under center, there’s hope for Cassel’s ability to play next Sunday against the Buffalo Bills in week one of the NFL regular season.

Over the last few years, several star players have played with cracked or even fractured ribs. Looking back at Super Bowl XLIII, Ben Roethlisberger led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a world championship with fractured ribs. Tom Brady played several games late in 2009 with multiple broken ribs. Donovan McNabb, Brett Favre, Chad Ochocinco and Devin McCourty have all played through the same. In other words, sometimes you just play through it.

Of course, that does mean that Cassel will be limited and need to be careful so it’s not as if this is an injury he can or will just shrug off. And if a cracked/fractured rib is bad enough or the wrong rib, then it could take him out. But if the rumor proves to, and at this point it’s just that, then Cassel’s injury isn’t the end of the world for Chiefs fan. They have to hope that it’s not too bad if there is an injury at all.

I was all for trading the farm to get Luck, thats because i thought at the time the chiefs were pretty solid all across the board except for RT and ILB. Bring him in and let him sit a year or two behind Cassell to learn. Now, i think we are going to forced to draft a RT fairly high if Gaither doesn't pan out. I have no doubt that he will be really good at Pass Pro from what i have seen. But i'm concerned a little abit his run blocking from what i have heard. Hopefully he will work out and make this a non issue. He may truly just be a LT. Belcher is a backup and needs a replacement. he excels in the run game but sucks when it comes to covering. We do need quality depth on the O line which we dont have.

Matt Cassel is struggling behind the Chiefs' leaky offensive line. The Chiefs' franchise quarterback has looked nothing like the efficient playmaker who guided Kansas City to a division title last season. He's completed only 12 of 27 passes for 182 yards in two preseason games, and failed to find a rhythm.

Part of his struggles can be attributed to the Chiefs' offensive line woes. The unit has failed to protect Cassel, whose accuracy has suffered amid constant harassment. Cassel completed only two passes to receivers in the loss to the Rams, resorting to a host of dump-off passes as defenders clamped down on deeper targets all night.

The offensive line's struggles have also limited the impact of the Chiefs' running game. Without a punishing ground attack to set up the timing of the play-action passing game, Cassel has been unable to push the ball downfield to Tony Moeaki and especially Dwayne Bowe. The duo made a living off deep throws executed off run-action last season, but those opportunities have been relatively nonexistent during the preseason.

why keep posting all this negative crap? it obviously cant be true if it is negative. the line is great that is why we didnt adress it. we have the best QB in the game and he doesnt need a good oline anyway. people will be sorry for all this crap when KC goes 16-0

We did address it if you remember. We drafted a O lineman in the 2nd round and signed Gaither, but Waters should have been kept this year. Even if it meant paying him 6 million. Right now, we have Hudon backing up 3 positions.

Not good enough to play in KC but good enough to possibly start in NE within a week of being there.

Maybe Palko will get hurt too. Sadly, we would be better off with Stanzi with Cassel being hurt.

With this oline I hope Cassel tries to come back early so he can break some more bones. anyone else smell luck in the air

Its the lack of options that bother me at the moment. If 1 guy goes down, we are out of backups. Not to mention that Richardson looked like he has regressed from last season. He has looked bad in Pass Pro. They better plan on assigning him a TE all the time. The next thing that bothers me, is the lack of Charles and the run game so far. Everybody but Dexter has been stuffed so far.
