Chiefs GM Scott Pioli Talks About Glenn Dorsey Playing NT

At Scott Pioli's press conference this afternoon, the Chiefs GM was asked an interesting question (that's been posed before).

What about Glenn Dorsey playing nose tackle?



His measurements -- listed at 6'1" and 297 pounds -- don't exactly scream nose tackle but it's an interesting thought.

Nick Wright of 610 Sports is the one who asked the question. He said he's heard there were some discussions going on about Dorsey and nose tackle.

Wright: "You mention Glenn Dorsey. I'm personally hearing from people close to the player that there have been discussions about him maybe playing nose tackle. Is that true?"

Pioli: "I think Glenn is a unique player in that he has the physical skill and body type to play numerous positions. Like we do with other positions, we're going to collect as many good players as we can and then the players themselves will sort out who are going to be the best ones on the field. It's like what you do with the offensive line. Find the five best guys and get them on the field."

Wright: "So he can play nose, specifically?"

Pioli: "He can do a lot of different things."

A very nice example of the non-answer answer. A Pioli specialty.

It's hard to take anything away from this because he doesn't really answer the question but I do think it's interesting that Wright brought this up. The Chiefs nose tackle situation is a big question mark.

Is Ron Edwards the starter again? Will it be addressed in the draft? Where does Shaun Smith fit in?

I kinda take from this, of course we will be looking for possible starters. Dorsey is unique but may not be the right 53. Maybe I am reading into it to much. But it wouldn't suprise me if he is traded draft weekend and we collect a pick or two.

Dorsey at NT would be a major fail

I think he likes Dorsey too much to trade him but he knows he doesn't fit.

Hes too short to be a true DE and hes not big enough to be a true NT.. but being a NT would be an even bigger waste of his talents.

we just need to cut our losses. dorsey is an amazing talent for a 4-3 defense but an average to above average player in the 3-4. i wouldnt be mad if he was a draft day trade

^ he could def help a team that still uses the cover 2.

I still think he has more worth than we could get out of him. I would at least give him another year.. the third year is when you really see what you've got with DL.

Probably right about 2-3 years, but I haven't seen anything outta him that gets me too excited. I say we trade him now while he has some value. I been sayin all along that this is the year they need to decide who is gonna be part of this franchise and who they aren't gonna move forward with. This is the draft we can get some serious cornerstone type of players in.

Teams completely run all over us when hes not in. Hes been a lot better than your giving him credit for. It was only his first year in the 3-4 and only his second year in the league. He will be better next year, especially with a better NT, a better DL coach, and a far more superior DC whos expertise is the DL in a 3-4.

I hope we can find a way to tackle. We mistackle, like the Raiders committ penalties. This shit has been going on since Robinson was the DC. We have got to be the worst open field tackling team in the NFL the last 7-8 years. I'm desperate RustShack, i wanna see some winning football at Arrowhead again. I'm 30 so it's not like I was 3 when we were the class of the West.

i will be interested to see what romeo can do with him this year. if we dont trade him i hope he can get the most out of this guy

Dorsey was proably our best run defender on our entire team last year... If he can fine tune some of that.. he will be a good player in this defense.

Hes not the ideal DE, that doesn't mean it wont work though.

I said to trade Dorsey a long time ago. Now that I think about it. Dorsey did a solid job at DE for us. I think that next season he will only get better.
