Chiefs, 49ers agree to Alex Smith trade, according to report

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers hav agreed to a trade that will send Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers to the Chiefs.
The deal can not become official until March 12 when the new league year opens. The compensation on the deal is not yet known. Update: A report states the Chiefs are giving up TWO draft picks.

The Chiefs and 49ers have struck a deal sending Alex Smith to Kansas City, according to Jay Glazer.

Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Wow is all I can say. At first glance, I don't know why the 49ers would shut the market down and do a deal this early. They can not make the trade official until March 12 when the new league year is here and the trading period is open.

The compensation on the deal is not yet known but rumors have been anywhere from a second round pick to a fifth round pick. The Chiefs could have an extra third round pick due to compensatory choices.

Smith would be yet another former 49ers quarterback to join the Chiefs, following in the footsteps of Steve Bono, Joe Montana and Elvis Grbac.

Smith has two years left on his contract, which is set to pay him $7.5 million in 2013. There's also a $1 million bonus due on March 15, which is why many expect this trade to get done before that point.

I actually read that it could be a 2nd this year and a 2nd in 14 Draft. I damn sure hope this is form the punk that reported Reid to the Cactus Patch was a done deal. If this shit is true then we are in fucking trouble! How fucking dumb can you possibly be?

What a fail if we are giving up two second round picks...

wow is all I can say. that 2 should be worth more than that. I like picking up Smith but only as a temporary guy to keep us competitive. not for a 2 and another pick. sounds like dorsey might be relation to Pioli.

Might be a good sign for you guys wanting Geno #1 overall. If Dorsey and Reid are stupid enough to give up this years 2 and more for Smith why wouldnt they double down?

New GM, new coach and a commitment to a mediocre QB. I wonder what the next GM, coach, QB combination will be 3 years for now.

No, this shit of trading for other teams leftovers has been on in KC for a long damn time. Grbac, Bono, Montana, Green, Cassell, etc. Pioli just continued the King Carl methodology! I really think this organization has a policy that refuses to take a risk on a 1st round QB. Instead of making the pick and coaching the player up they trade the pick for a known fucking quantity. Lets calculate the risk of drafting a guy verses trading for a guy. If you figure Green and Montana as the only successful trades that is 40% on trading for a guy verses 50% on drafting a guy! When we brought in Andy Reid and John Dorsey to lead this team, like many others I was very excited. Two guys who have success in evaluating the QB position and drafting players in a smart, efficient manner. Two guys who have been very successful throughout their careers. They came in, brought in a coaching staff that on paper looks young, bright and impressive. We have the first pick sitting there for them to use. We were actually going to be a team that builds around a young solid QB and becomes one of the teams like the Ravens, Steelers, and Packers that year in and year out is in the playoff hunt. A 2nd round pick and a 3rd rounder next year that could turn into a 2nd next year for Alex Smith. Im distraught. Im so pissed off that im just numb. We traded 2 very high draft picks for a guy with something along the lines of a 19-31 career record. A guy who has 3 300 yard career passing games. A guy who has started a full 16 game season twice in his career. A guy who was benched in favor of guys like David Carr, J.T. O'Sullivan, and Shaun Hill. A guy with a completion percentage along the lines of Cassel. Matter of fact all of his career stats are unrealistically similar to Cassel. This is possibly one of the worst trades in NFL history guys. We just gave up 2 solid young draft picks for a guy who's 28 and has accomplished jack shit.

This trade is worse than the Cassel trade. Far worse. The Cassel deal gave us a younger QB and a veteran LB for a lone 2nd round pick. Still an awful deal but my God guys..this deal blows the Cassel deal out of the water. Andy Reid and John Dorsey just put themselves in the same dogshit position Scott Pioli and Haley&Crennel were in. The leash is short. Very short. Theres a reason the year San Fran made the NFC Championship game, they were 31st in passing attempts. THEY DIDNT TRUST ALEX FUCKING SMITH. I would have gave a 4th for Alex Smith. He's a reasonable backup. To give multiple high draft picks for a 28 year old guy who's done nothing spectacular..its just the Chiefs way. They are committing to him long term too. We wont be drafting a QB high for a while now. If there was a breaking point, this is it.

Like Cassel, Ill give Alex Smith a chance. He'll be on a VERY short leash. Im not expecting much out of him. Reid will probably work around his weaknesses like he ususally does with his QBs, but he's just not good. This is a crucial season for this franchise unlike any other season in its history. Fans were already about to burn bridges after the Pioli era. After this trade, after this draft, its going to be a tough, long season guys.

I agree they gave up too much. and SF knows it that is why the deal was done before it could become official. I would have made this trade for Foles before Smith. I like picking him up but the price was waaaayyyy to high.

Foles has twice the upside Alex Smith has. Foles has a better arm, more familiarity at this point and would have been a much better option for what we gave up. Im fucking disgusted.

I agree with this 100%. I think they could have had Foles for less actually. I loved the Pioli signing right off the bat then quickly changed when he drafted Jackson. i loved the reid and Dorsey signings and hate their 1st big move. But I only hate it because of the price so I will let it play out 1st since I did like the idea of picking up A. Smith. Just think they could have gotten it done for a 3rd after March 12th when SF found KC was the only very interested team.

Ok we need to quite comparing Smith to Cassel. Smith helped is team reach the NFC Championship in 2011. And would have been SB if not for Kyle Williams fumbles. And Smith played very well in that playoff run. Cassel never even got close to that level. Cassel folded in 2010 in our playoff run. Hell Smith was playing well before he got hurt. But Colin just ran away with it after taking over. Did we give up to much? Time will tell. But Smith improves this team more than any other QB available. Is he a longterm answer? No! And have already read his contract will stand as is. Let him play a year and see what he does. Good pick up in my book.

You just said that Smith is better than any other QB available and not a long term solution. No way this team is better off with Smith over Geno! Geno aside your talking about a guy who has thrown 63 career picks to 81 TD's and doesn't throw a deep ball. Smith didn't take the 49er's anywhere! He benefited from a good coach, good defense, and great running game.

This is true. I wanted A. Smith weeks ago. I just feel at the moment it was too much and if they had waited til after the 12th SF would have accepted our 3rd alone this year. If he was in such high demand no way SF accepts a trade offer without letting teams get into a bidding war.

Yes to win right now. That's what this franchise is screaming for. Smith may not be the QBOTF. But he is the QB of right now. And he is the best option for right now.The search For the QBOTF is still on.

So if your comparing Smith to Cassel. And Smith didn't help SF do anything. Are you saying Cassel could have taken SF to the NFC Championship that year? Because that would be absurd. Smith took along time to get his groove I admit. But now that he has found it. He is going to make the best of it. Everyone was excited when Reid and Dorsey got here because they are great with evaluating and making Qbs. But not that they pick who they think gives us the best chance to win.
