Pretty solid so far without free agency actually starting free agency. That safety is a great addition!

Can't wait for actual FA to begin. To see what we do. Pretty good start so far looking at depth.

We'd be stacked if we signed Moore on top of Berry, Abdullah, and Lewis.

Sounds like Albert might get signed and Bowe tagged. I think a year under Reid would be enough to get Bowe to sign at a discount... Assuming Reid brings the best QB play year one Bowe has ever had.

Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns are not the team on the verge of acquiring Alex Smith. The Jaguars have ruled themselves out. The Browns aren't the team, either, and the Chiefs have yet to dispute their association with CBS' report. All signs continue to point to Alex Smith becoming Andy Reid's next quarterback.

Trading little for Smith doesn't mean we aren't drafting a QB. But not getting Albert resigned might. If we pass on Geno, Joeckel better be one of the best LT's in the NFL day one.

Reports: Trade that will take Alex Smith out of San Francisco is ‘all but done’

Alex Smith may be on the verge of starting again. (Getty Images)

INDIANAPOLIS -- According to multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers have wrapped up a trade that will put quarterback Alex Smith in a new city. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported via Twitter that the 49ers have sewed up negotiations with a willing trade partner. The interested team is not yet known, though Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com says that from everything he's heard around the scouting combine this week, the Kansas City Chiefs have a deal for Smith that is "all but done."

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported on the NFL Network that the Chiefs have the most interest, and that new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is very intrigued with Smith's mobility, but that a deal isn't yet consummated. Rapoport also said on NFL.com that the 49ers will continue to lay the groundwork for a trade that will give Smith to a new NFL team.

If the deal is in place, it can't actually take place until the new league year begins on March 12.

Smith, the 49ers' first draft pick in 2005 and the first overall selection that season, went through several subpar seasons before Jim Harbaugh was hired as the team's head coach before the 2011 season. Harbaugh limited Smith's liabilities and accentuated his strengths, and Smith responded with his best season to date that year. He threw 17 touchdown passes and just five interceptions in 2011, and came back with an even stronger campaign in 2012.

Through nine starts, he had a quarterback rating of 104.1, but a concussion suffered in the team's 24-24 tie with the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 11 opened the door for second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick, selected in the second round of the 2011 draft. Kaepernick lit the 49ers' formerly conservative offense up with his deep passing ability and impressive mobility, leading the 49ers to a close loss in Super Bowl XLVII to the Baltimore Ravens.

"I think the main thing is Alex is a heck of a football player," Harbaugh said this week at the combine. "Alex is really playing the best football of his career the last two years. And we think we have the best quarterback situation in the National Football League. Feel strongly about that. Again, that'll be a process that plays out. Alex Smith, continuing to be a 49ers or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months. Those are the two possibilities -- most-likely possibilities."

Kaepernick is clearly the future of the 49ers, and Smith will be a willing and attractive target for several NFL teams in desperate need of improvement at the quarterback position. With the 2013 draft class coming up short at quarterback, and the Chiefs holding the number-one spot in the draft, a trade for Smith would allow them to select an outstanding offensive or defensive lineman this year.

Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel is most often pointed toward Kansas City in mock drafts that don't include a quarterback by default, but Central Michigan's Eric Fisher and Florida defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd are possibilities with the top spot. A guard has never been selected first overall, but some experts believe that Alabama's Chance Warmack is the best player in this draft class.

Smith is currently signed with the 49ers through the 2014 NFL season. In 2013, he is scheduled to make a base salary of $7.5 million plus a $1 million roster bonus if he's still with the team at the turn of the new league year.

Why... Geno wouldn't even be a top 15 QB day one... of his 2nd year.

watch some tape..... Smith has better accuracy downfield as to where Cassel has NONE. And Smith can go through his progressions as to where Cassel NEVER could. I'm not saying Smith is a top QB but he has been successful the last 2 seasons. And to say that he is not an upgrade over Cassel shows your lack of knowledge. Stats aren't always telling. Watch the tape . Winning is what counts.

Smith was a major ass bust until Harbaugh! He was SO accurate and READ defenses so well that he consistently had as many INT's as TD's and had a completion percentage in the 50's. Harbaugh figured out a way to get something out of him just like Weis did with Cassell in 10. It's eerily similar that Smith's 2011 stats are pretty much exactly the same as Cassell's 2010 stats. How did Smith make the turn around? Exactly the same way that Weis used Cassell! Play action. Smith isn't a franchise guy, he's a manager at best. His accuracy is a little better in the intermediate range but he doesn't throw the deep ball all that well like somebody else we know. He's an upgrade over Cassell but not by much. Keep in mind that Cassell threw for 3700 yards and 63% once upon a time and he see how that turned out. Why did I call Smith Cassell version 2? He will be alright until the running game gets stopped and then your fucked because he's not going to carry a team. How's that for knowledge?

The Kansas City Star agrees there's "enough smoke" behind the Alex Smith-to-Chiefs trade rumors to believe Smith will indeed be the team's starting quarterback in 2013. The 49ers are not expected to trade Smith in the division, likely ruling out the Cardinals. The Browns and Jaguars have both said they're not in the Smith bidding. As beat writer Adam Teicher notes, "the Chiefs have issued no such denial." The Smith saga will drag on until March 12, when the trading period opens around the NFL. Expect Kansas City to acquire Smith shortly thereafter.

PostSubject: Re: Chiefs Free Agency   Chiefs Free Agency EmptyMon Feb 25, 2013 2:36 pm

All I'm saying is Smith has been successful the last two years with a good coach(which we now have). When looking at the QB's available for trade and in free agency he has had the most recent success. (Foles lost most of the games he started and Flynn hasn't proven shit and is a big question mark, and after that there isn't much else to look at). In a "what have you done for me lately" driven league, Alex Smith stands alone at the top of available veteran QB's. We need a veteran to start while we groom a rookie to take over, Smith fits that description and gives us the best chance of winning in 2013 (which Reid and Dorsey know is expected from this fanbase). Most of you want to draft Geno #1 and hand him the starting job day one. Geno Smith is NOT ready to start day one. I am not against drafting GS... I just don't believe drafting a guy, who is very inconsistant and still needs to be developed, 1st overall is a smart move. We pick up a veteran stopgap in FA (Alex Smith), draft a player 1st overall that can contribute immediately(not Geno Smith), and either move back into 1st rd or just draft a QB in the 2nd rd to be the QB of the future. Geno has not yet proven to be heads and shoulders above the rest of the top QB's ( and I use the term top QB's loosely) so if Geno's not there then take Wilson, Nassib, Manuel or whoever is there and is at the top of your board. If Reid can make Kolb look good I'm certain he can do it with many of the QB's in this draft not named Geno Smith.

Alex Smith can't go through his progressions! He was a bust until Harbaugh limited him and told him if his primary receiver isn't open dump it off!

Any QB in the NFL will look good in that situation, even Cassel. Who looked comparable with Weis giving him a little more slack than that!

Well apparently you all know more than the guys hired to do the job. I guess Clark Hunt never got your resumes. Lets just draft Geno Smith 1st overall and hand him the keys. It's ineveitable that because we have not drafted a QB in the first rd in decades, that if we do so now and give him the starting job day one that he will be successful and lead us to the promised land. Or... lets let the PROFESSIONALS with a successful track record, hired to do the job, make the call using their knowledge and not their emotions. Unless of course they forgot everything that made them successful at their previous job on the plane ride to KC. I will let them make the decisions they make and wait to see if they succeed or fail before I call them out on those decisions. Because I don't pretend to know more until they prve that to be true, like in Scott Pioli's case.

I am fine with us trading for Alex Smith, but not as our long term answer. And I don't think Reid and Dorsey plan on him being THE guy either. I think they decided that they want to win this upcoming season and went out and go the best available QB in thier minds. This is the answer until we can find our guy. Reid said himself that his job is to "find the next Len Dawson" I think he knows that Alex Smith is no Len Dawson.
