Kansas City Chiefs: Round 1, Pick #5

Eric Berry, S

Height: 6'0"
Weight: 211 lbs.
Arm Length: 33 1/4 in.
Hand Size: 9 5/8 in.
College: Tennessee

Quote:
Analysis

Read & React: One of his greatest assets. Shows uncommon discipline, reading the play completely before making his move. Rarely fooled by play-action or misdirection or beaten over the top due to taking false steps. Reads screens at the line of scrimmage, but waits until the quarterback is making the throw before accelerating to the ball. Good burst and accelerates smoothly. Takes very good angles to the ball. Good body control and times his leaps very well to compete in jump-ball situations with bigger receivers.

Man Coverage: Unique agility and straight-line speed for a safety. Often was asked to drop down as the nickel cornerback, showing good flexibility, balance and acceleration to turn and run with receivers. Can flip his hips, plant his foot in the ground and drive to mirror receivers' routes. Good physicality in press to re-route the slot receiver or tight end. Rides receivers for a few yards to disrupt timing with the quarterback. Times his leaps well and has natural ball skills.

Zone Coverage: Smooth, low backpedal with the balance to change direction without losing speed. Understands weak spots in coverage and what the receiver is trying to do against him. Breaks on the ball quickly. Reliable open-field tackler. Arrives with significantly more pop than his size would indicate.

Closing/Recovery: Closes on the ball as well as any safety in the draft. Rare diagnosis skills and has a quick burst when changing direction. Good acceleration with a late explosive burst as the ball arrives. Locates the ball in the air and times his leaps well. Is shorter than scouts would prefer, but highpoints passes when he has the opportunity for the interception.

Run Support: Quickly diagnoses run to get downhill quickly to limit the yardage gained. Stout tackler at the point, but doesn't need to make the tackle to make the play. Good team defender that makes the unselfish plays. Attacks the pulling guard or lead blocker low to blow up the play and leave easy tackles at the line of scrimmage for his teammates.

Tackling: Reliable open-field tackler with rare explosiveness considering his lack of prototypical size. Brings his hips through the tackle to generate impressive drive and knock bigger ballcarriers back. Great range due to very good speed and rare instincts. Understands his role as the last line of defense and takes proper angles to minimize the yardage given up, but make the tackle. Good wrap-up tackler with the body control to adjust to elusive ballcarriers in the open field and latch on to drag down.

Intangibles: High character, high-effort player. Coaches rave about his leadership qualities and instincts. Started all 39 games of his career, including 14 as a true freshman. Voted team captain as a sophomore and junior. Competes on special teams despite his All-American status.

Strengths

Berry has a supreme blend of strength and athleticism for a defensive back. One of college football’s most productive players during the last three seasons. Is a very smart defender who displays outstanding instincts. Has tremendous range when playing the run or pass. Very aggressive coming up in run support. Has the leadership qualities to mold into a future team captain.

Weaknesses

Not many areas of concern with Berry. Front offices must check shoulder surgery. Only possesses average size for a safety at the next level but plays bigger than his listed measurables.

Kansas City Chiefs: Round 2, Pick #5

Dexter McCluster, RB

Height: 5'9"
Weight: 172 lbs.
Arm Length: 29 1/4 in.
Hand Size: 8 3/8 in.
College: Mississippi

Quote:
Analysis

Release: Good lateral agility to elude the defender at the line and has the straight-line speed to demand respect. Though he's much stronger than his size would indicate, he's reliant upon his lateral agility to gain a clean release, as he is lacking in hand placement and technique as a receiver.

Hands: Good hands to pluck the ball outside of his frame. Can track the ball over his shoulder and is quick to secure the pass and look for additional yardage. Good making adjustments to poorly throw passes but struggles when attempting to catch in traffic.

Route running: Isn't asked to run a variety of pro-style routes within this offense. Flashes excellent quickness, but is only a marginal route-runner despite his athleticism.

After the catch: Elusive and has the acceleration and top-end speed to run away from defenders if he gets in the open field. Good vision and sets up his blocks nicely with the ability to burst through a small gap. Versatile threat capable of contributing as a runner, receiver and returner.

Blocking: Pesky blocker who provides good effort and is stronger than he looks but lacks great bulk. Gives good effort downfield to chip when a teammate breaks into the open.

Intangibles: Good toughness as an interior runner and will be viewed as a running back prospect by some. The results of McCluster's medical reports from the Combine could prove critical in his final draft grade. He missed six games in 2006 due to a shoulder injury involving nerve damage and another four games in 2007 due to re-injuring the same shoulder in the preseason. Has great toughness, but will struggle to hold up to the physical pounding of the NFL as a running back. Experienced punt and kick returner.

NFL Comparison: Sinorice Moss, Giants

Strengths

McCluster possesses elite speed and explosiveness for the running back position. Has outstanding initial quickness needed to get through the hole. Displays impressive receiving skills and can be a threat deep down the field. Feisty player who loves to compete. Has dangerous elusiveness in space, is a terror on the perimeter, and is a true home run threat.

Weaknesses

McCluster does not have the necessary size and strength to carry the load at next level. Could struggle with his inside running but was willing and productive in college. Blocking is an area of concern due to his lack of size and strength necessary to pick up blitzing linebackers. May not break many tackles.

Kansas City Chiefs: Round 2, Pick #18

Javier Arenas, CB

Height: 5'9"
Weight: 197 lbs.
Arm Length:30 7/8 in.
Hand Size: 9 1/2 in.
College: Alabama

Quote:
Analysis
Read & React: Good anticipatory skills. Reads the action and breaks on the ball quickly. Can be beaten with good play-action fakes. Lacks the deep speed to recover and has to be protected over the top by a safety.

Man Coverage: Flashes an aggressive pop at the line of scrimmage when in man coverage. Good lateral agility to turn and run with receivers. More quick than fast, and can be beaten over the top if left alone in man coverage.

Zone Coverage: Alert and active defender when in zone. Reads the action quickly and gets a good break on the ball, especially on short and intermediate routes. Disciplined defender and reliable tackler.

Closing/Recovery: Lacks the straight-line speed needed to recover if beaten initially. Quick feet and possesses a very good first step to accelerate out of his breaks to close. Has good leaping ability, but lacks the height teams prefer and can be beaten by bigger, taller receivers. Natural hands and an obvious threat with the ball in his hands.

Run Support: Aggressive fighting through blocks to come up in run support. Highly active defender and an effective open-field tackler.

Tackling: Secure open-field tackler who breaks down in space against shifty athletes. Not a big hitter, but wraps his arms around his target with good drive for a player his size. Struggles some against bigger receivers, but has good strength to drag them down quickly.

Intangibles: Knack for returning punts/kicks didn't just develop in college -- he set the record for Robinson High School in Tampa with seven returns for touchdowns as a senior. Good athletic bloodlines. Cousin, Gilbert Arenas, plays in the NBA for the Washington Wizards.

Strengths

Like most defensive backs who receive extensive playing time from Nick Saban, Arenas has outstanding instincts and intelligence. Despite being a smaller corner, he plays with great toughness. His quickness and burst allow him to jump shorter routes and come up fast in run support. Has been a highly-productive player in Tuscaloosa. Arenas is also an excellent special team’s contributor.

Weaknesses

Arenas lacks height and could have trouble covering taller, wide catch-radius receivers. He’s a raw technician, which was masked a bit in college due to his instincts. Will need to improve this area when matched up against savvy NFL vets. Only possesses average ball skills and drops some catchable interceptions. Fully-developed physically and has likely maxed out his potential.

Arenas sounds exactly like Flowers. McCluster sounds like he can be a great slot receiver, and I think them taking him over a similar guy in Golden Tate says a lot.

Jon Asamoah, OG
Height: 6-4 | Weight: 308 | College: Illinois

Analysis

Pass blocking: Tough to beat in pass protection because of his length and anchor. Uses his long arms and re-adjusts hands when needed to keep his man at a distance. His pads get a bit tall but he manages to keep his lean and move his feet to stay in front. Extends his arms, does not punch. Must recover more quickly if punched or ripped off. Agile and flexible enough to pick up late blitzers, but needs to be more aware.

Run blocking: Excellent body control on the line and in space. Uses defender's momentum to take him out of the hole, but is also strong enough to turn a tackle. Strong on double teams; moves nose tackle well out of the hole. Allows defenders to get under his pads at times when blocking on the move. Gets low and looks strong in goal-line situations.

Pulling/trapping: Moves well for a guard of his height. Gets around the center quickly to find a target when on the move. Runs a bit high; must sink his hips to keep leverage after contact. Effectively cut blocks, getting in front to prevent clipping calls.

Initial Quickness: Fires off the ball on run plays, staying low for his height and getting his hands up into a jersey quickly. Good quickness off the snap in pass protection.

Downfield: Very good feet, easily getting to second or third level and consistently hits the MIKE or another inside target. Smooth runner in space. Latches onto linebackers and doesn't let go - often putting them on the ground, unless he wants to move onto the next player. Must be more consistent keeping his feet through trash.

Intangibles: Excellent practice and weight room habits. Plays with some nastiness on the field, but is a jovial leader in the locker room. Awarded best effort award for spring 2009, along with an award for having the team's highest grades. Also an Academic All-American in '09.

Asamoah is a three year starter for the Illini and has the foot agility, body control, and intelligence to play on either side of the center. He is exceptionally quick into his blocks and has the ability to make reach blocks on opponents playing on his edge. He is a good knee bender but will allow his pads to get a bit high at times and will overextend at times causing him to struggle when having to recover and right himself against good counter moves. He is more finesse than powerful or explosive but does show good lower body strength to hunker down and stop the bull rush.

Strengths-
Asamoah has enough size for a guard at the next level. Possesses great quickness and agility and can pull and get out in front. Has long arms. Is a smart player who understands his team’s protection schemes. Is a tough guy with an impressive work ethic. Gets the most from his ability.

Weaknesses-
Could afford to put on more bulk. Will play tall at times and needs to watch his pad level. Lacks heavy punch in pass protection to really jolt defenders. Does not react and recover as well as we’d like to see in pass protection.

Tony Moeaki

*
Height:
6'3"
*
Weight:
245 lbs.
*
Arm Length:
33 1/4 in.
*
Hand Size:
10 1/8 in.

Analysis-
Release: Smooth in his release but takes time to get going out of a three-point stance. Able to chip or even get a punch on a pass rusher before smoothly going out on his route. Fluidly beats linebackers down the seam, but could use his size and strength to get better separation.

Hands: Regularly makes highlight reel catches but will have the occasional crucial drop. Very good body control to make catches against the sideline, down the seam in traffic and on jump balls. Uses his hands more often than not, grabbing the ball away from his frame. Adjusts to poor passes whether high, low or wide. A reliable red zone target who uses his size and hands to hold off smaller defenders. Not a threat on jump balls.

Route running: Can be used in motion and on the line. Gets open on crossing and corner patterns against man coverage, and sits down in zones. Not an elite athlete; doesn't sink his hips when making a cut. Sells the block before turning for a middle screen, bootleg or short out in the end zone. Aware of the sideline, getting both feet in bounds while securing the catch, even when under pressure.

After the catch: Strong but fluid runner in the open field. Secures the ball in traffic. Not overly elusive or agile, but can leap over cut tackles and continue on his way. Has fair speed for his size but does not have a second gear to run away from defenders.

Blocking: Gives very good effort and owns some pop blocking for the run game. Has the bulk and strength to seal the edge against defensive ends, as well as the feet to mirror them in pass protection. Keeps feet moving and hands active to maintain angle and sustain. Blocks through the whistle. Doesn't consistently reach defensive backs downfield, but is tough for them to rip off once he latches on.

Intangibles: Hard worker who does everything asked of him on the field. Quiet player but commands respect through his production, attitude and reliability. Serious durability concerns. Lost for the 2007 season four games in with a broken wrist and dislocated elbow, spring 2008 practice due to surgery on that wrist, preseason practices and the first two games of the 2008 season with a fractured foot, additional time in 2008 with hamstring injury and concussions, and three games with an ankle injury in 2009.

Moeaki has been a bit of a disappointment since coming to Iowa as the top-ranked high school tight end in the country. He has struggled to stay on the field as he has missed games in virtually every season of his career at Iowa. He is a good athlete but lacks a second gear to stretch the secondary down the middle and lacks a big burst coming out of his cuts to separate from defenders. He shows effort as a blocker but lacks the lower body strength to block with much power. His best shot may be as an H-back or a tight end that is generally split out and lined up off the line of scrimmage.

Strengths-
Moeaki is a fluid athlete with soft hands. Athletic enough to line up wide in a two point stance. Maintains good body control and can adjust to throws away from his chest. Very coachable, has a good attitude and plays hard to the whistle.

Weaknesses-
Lacks adequate height and does not have much room to add bulk. Limited top-end speed and agility prevents him from getting separation on his routes. Struggles to find holes in zone coverage. Does not have adequate power in his lower half and cannot drive defenders off the ball. Missed too many games due to injury in college.

If we run a cover 2 secondary Arenas should start opposite Flowers... they are pretty much the same player... or if we can just get more pressure so WR's don't have time to get deep they would be great. But both can get burned by fast WR's easy if the QB has time to throw deep... thats why they both need safety help over the top ala cover two scheme.

Arenas is a poor man flowers though.. I don't want anyone jumping on me.. because hes not as good as Flowers.. they are just the same exact type of CB. I heard Gruden comparing him to Ronde Barber, and thats exactly who I compared Flowers to coming out.

We have a lot of good CB's though. Arenas and especially Washington have good upside. Carr isn't bad either. We shouldn't have to worry about getting burned by the pass anymore with Page back and Berry as the other safety. Hopefully Shaun Smith, Romeo Crennel, and more experiance for our DE's is enough to stop the run too.

Kendrick Lewis (FS)

*
Height:
6'0"
*
Weight:
198 lbs.
*
Arm Length:
30 1/2 in.
*
Hand Size:
8 5/8 in.
*
College:
Mississippi

Read & React: Better in this area than you'd expect, considering his relative lack of experience. Good awareness for coverage. Reads the quarterback and has a burst to close on the ball. Aggressively supports the running game, but is a disciplined defender not easily fooled by play-action and misdirection. Better functional than timed speed. Has the range to get to the sideline from the hash.

Man Coverage: High, choppy backpedal and is too tight in the hips to handle dropping down and covering NFL receivers out of the slot, as he loses a step in his transition. Does have good functional speed to accelerate and generates a nice closing burst on the ball. Competitive. Fights for the ball.

Zone Coverage: Sound zone defender that keeps on eye on underneath routes and maintains his discipline in his deep responsibilities. Reads the quarterback's eyes and gets an early break on the ball. Closes quickly, taking good angles and is a reliable, wrap-up tackler with some pop.

Closing/Recovery: Good key-and-diagnose skills to get an early jump on the ball and shows good foot quickness and balance to plant and drive on the ball in front of him. Lacks the size scouts prefer at free safety, but is a good leaper and times his jumps well. Competes for jump balls against taller athletes. Quick hands and good hand-eye coordination to sneak his hands into the receiver's chest and pull the ball out. Has good, not great speed for deep coverage. Lacks elite speed and does not appear to have an extra gear to recover.

Run Support: Disciplined defender -- isn't easily fooled by play-action, but closes quickly once he sees the play is a run. Good vision and functional speed to slice through the trash and close to make plays near the line of scrimmage. Avoids blockers with good lateral agility and balance. Good team defender. Willing to take out the legs of the oncoming blocker to allow his teammates the tackle opportunity. Takes good angles in pursuit.

Tackling: Reliable open-field tackler; provides a solid last line of defense. Closes quickly and is a much more physical hitter than his size would indicate. Brings his hips and tackles through the ballcarrier to hit emphatically. Willing to take on a bigger ballcarrier with no hesitation. Willing to jump into the pile to clean up for the assisted tackle. Plays to and through the whistle on occasion and was penalized in 2009 for late hits.

Intangibles: Loves the game. Respected by fans, teammates and coaches for his passion and dedication to the Ole Miss program. Voted a team captain in 2009.

Lewis broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore and was productive for three seasons in the Rebels' secondary. He has a good combination of size, strength and athleticism. He is a competitive, instinctive defender who shows range in run support as well as combination zone coverages. He lacks great burst and pure speed in man schemes, but his limitations aren't glaring. He is a quick reactor, taking proper angles and leveraging the ball well. He is a solid tackler but could be more physical on contact. His ball skills are solid but hand dexterity isn't elite. Lewis is a good football player with vocal leadership skills who has a chance to develop into an NFL starter.

Strengths-
Lewis is an aggressive kid who plays faster than his listed speed. Shows good lateral range and anticipates underneath routes in zone coverage. Locates balls in the air quickly, attacks with precise angles, and high-points the ball. Technically sound tackler who wraps the ball carrier.

Weaknesses-
Does not have elite speed to be a true centerfielder and make plays all over the field. Struggles to turn and run with receivers in man coverage. Lacks the strength and hand technique to disengage from blockers in the box. Loses position at times, giving up soft spots in zone coverage.

Cameron Sheffield (DE)

*
Height:
6'2"
*
Weight:
257 lbs.
*
Arm Length:
33 in.
*
Hand Size:
10 in.
*
College:
Troy

Read & React: A disciplined defender who understands his containment responsibilities and has enough quickness, lateral agility and strength to stretch the runner wide. Good burst upfield as a pass rusher, but quickly recognizes the screen and draw, showing the ability to re-direct inside. Grabs hold of the back on the screen and kills the play. Improved his recognition of passing lanes and the impact he can have by getting his hands up as a senior, recording a career-high six PBUs.

Run defense: Lacks the bulk to remain at defensive end full-time in the NFL, but is stronger than his size might suggest. Plays with good pad level and has the strength in his upper and lower to stack and shed the block. Surprising lateral agility to elude blockers in space. Breaks down well and has a burst to change directions and better straight-line speed than he's given credit for. Good hustle downfield.

Pass defense: Was rarely asked to drop back into coverage while at Troy, but proved surprisingly nimble and alert as an outside linebacker at the Senior Bowl. High in his backpedal, but was smoother than expected turning and showed good straight-line speed to trail the tight end down the sideline. Raw, but has some legitimate upside here.

Tackling: Shows the body control to handle the transition to linebacker. Breaks down well in space for a career defensive end, showing the patience and quick feet to tackle elusive ballcarriers on the edge. Good size and strength to take down bigger ballcarriers. Prefers to wrap up securely and will do so when he can, but will use his long arms to trip up the ballcarrier when forced to make the diving attempt.

Pass Rush/Blitz: Not surprisingly, one of his better areas. Though he doesn't possess a truly explosive burst out of his three-point stance, he does have the quick step to force the tackle back on his heels and the agility to re-direct inside. Good strength for the bull-rush. Has shown a great deal of improvement throughout his career in terms of getting his hands up in the passing lanes -- posting one PBU in 2007, three in 2008 and six in 2009 …

Intangibles: Shy and reserved. A very humble and team-oriented player that the coaches rave about. Will have to have his wrist checked out at the Combine after breaking it during a pick-up basketball game prior to the 2008 season.

Sheffield was a productive, three-year starter in college. He has a good combination of size and strength for the position with average athleticism. He is a tough competitive defender but lacks explosiveness on contact. Leverages the ball well versus the run but doesn't have the same instincts and reactions versus the pass. He lacks great edge quickness when rushing the passer but has enough variety with his moves and counters to be effective. He is a solid wrap-up tackler in confined areas but lacks great lateral agility and quickness in space to be reliable. Sheffield is a bit of a 'tweener and may not have enough overall skills to push for a starting position at the next level.

Strengths-
Big kid with a large frame. Quick in the short area and takes proper pursuit angles. Strong athlete who maintains good balance and is difficult to move out of running lanes. Solid tackler who wraps up the ballcarrier. Very productive and durable in college.

Weaknesses-
Does not possess the speed to be a sideline-to-sideline player. Late reacting to play action and takes too long to locate the ball. Struggles dropping into coverage and lacks the athleticism to stick in man coverage. Stiff in the hips and loses speed in transition. Has short arms and lacks an explosive punch.

So were stuck with Demario Williams? Sad

But actually I think I liked this draft outside of the Arenas pick....Weis must not of been as fond of Clausen as we thought.

Sporting News draft mag has Lewis as the 5th best safety, saying he should be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. They also have Tony Moeaki the 2nd rated TE. And Sheffield as the 14th best OLB, projected as a 4th rounder.
