Scott Pioli: “I need to do a better job”
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 13, 2011, 7:08 PM EST
Scott Pioli AP

After Kansas City fired Todd Haley on Monday, some Chiefs fans said the team was only halfway to making the necessary changes at the top, as General Manager Scott Pioli should have been been on the way out as well.

Pioli says he agrees with the part about him needing to do better. But he also defended the talent he has acquired.

“We have a locker room that has talent,” Pioli said. “We also have a good makeup of character in that locker room, but it’s abundantly clear that we’re not in a spot we need to be with our record where it is and our team in a position it is. I need to do a better job.”

Frustrated Chiefs fans would say that it’s a little hard to square Pioli’s belief that the roster has talent with the results on the field this season, but it sounds like Pioli has the trust of the one person whose opinion really matters, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt.

“I do have a lot of confidence in Scott and I do believe he’s going to help us be successful over the long run,” Hunt said.

So Pioli may need to do a better job, but that doesn’t mean his job is on the line.

I think Pioli has done a good job not great. In a couple of years as long as we dont have a shit ton more ACL tears we could really be competing.

He needs to get on the ball with depth this offseason

Overall hes done a real good job. But his biggest downfall was the QB situation he forced upon his coaching staff. The NFL is a league of QB's now. 95% of the time, you are going to need an elite franchise QB and Cassel is not that.

He certainly missed in key areas, OT being a big one. Letting Waters walk in favor of Lilja was a terrible decision. He screwed the pooch at QB both with Cassell and a veteran backup. Has done little at ILB. Certainly failed at the S spot this year. Piscatelly was absolutely a worse than terrible decision. I'm not faulting Pioli with the Draft as I feel hes done a good job of acquiring talent. I'm talking mainly about FA and bringing in some veteran depth instead of going with players that should be out of league. B Rich, Palko, Sabby, Washington, etc. Belcher is a back up who cant cover to save his ass. I still have a hard time believing he didn't try and do more to upgrade the TE position. I know Pope was Haleys baby, but he doesn't do much for me.

Pioli has done a spectacular job in the draft so far. FA is his short fall for sure. Just not bringing in the talent we need to put us over the top is a huge shortfall of his.

Imagine a starting line with both Waters and Gaither on it this year...

It should have been Gaither/Waters/Weig/Aso/Albert

That would have been a decent O line that could have gotten things done.

Pioli/Haley have set this team back a couple years just by their moves from this year alone..

That I will agree on. This wasn't a good year in FA. I fault Haley for the Gaither debacle, he should have used him and give him a shot. I liked the Breaston move, everyone reported he was done. He turned out to be one of our best WRs this year. I'm really sore about Lilja being kept over Waters and Gaither not getting used.

This all goes back to Haley knowing he was gonna get fired this season. Its probably just his way of getting back at Pioli by starting Lilja over Hudson, cutting Waters and Gaither, and starting Palko over Stanzi. Anybody with common sense wouldnt have made these moves.

I dont see how we have been set back a couple of years by any moves made this offseason. We have a talented young core to this team. We are a couple D-lineman and another ILB away from being an elite defense. Then we get Berry back next season. Our pass rush has improved immensly since the beggining of the season. Houston is really coming along, he and Tamba could be a great book end pair of pass rushers for many years to come. We still have a free agency period and the draft ahead of us. I really think we should be a playoff team next season.

And now the offense. If we get a good RT and another interior lineman via the draft or free agency. Maybe Mims could turn out to be something?? Then outside of that we have a VERY talented team. The way I see it, we have made some strides forward. We get 4 solid starters back next season in Berry, JC, Moiaki, and Siler. 2 of whom are pro-bowl caliber players. And we added a decent QB in Orton and fired the head coach who's mouth is sewed to Matt Cassel's dick so I think the better QB will actually start next season.

I agree.. We have so much young talent on this roster.. And as we can see today, Orton is doing a fantastic job. We will have a good team next season.

Its truly amazing how well an offense plays when they have a legit QB under center..I mean wow. It was so weird watching a QB stand in the pocket, make all the right reads, and throw the ball down field and not check down. Defense also did a great job at shutting down Rodgers..

I cant say enough about how GREAT this offensive line played today.. Clay Mathews is rushing from the right side.. Did you even hear his name??!?! I know I didnt. phenomenal job today. offense needs to finish drives though.. That nearly killed us.

Still wasn't bad for not having our Co-OC or whatever Haley did for the offense, having a new HC, and having a new QB.

I think the difference for the O line was Ortons quick release!

Cassel makes any line look bad, and Palko just sucks.

The playcalling in the redzone was terrible. We should have put up at LEAST 28+ points this game and came away with 19. You have a 6'5" Baldwin, 6'8" Pope, Bowe, and Baldwin to throw to. Make a quick throw and get it in instead of jacking with Jackie Battle some more.

They had McClain wide open and be dropped the damn ball! This is where having a good O line will pay off. When you dont have the power to line up and gain a yard on the goal line its just a bad deal. I'm surprised they didn't throw the fade to Bowe or Baldwin as well.

He tried Baldwin a couple times just didn't pan out. I don't think the timing is all there yet. When it does look out, Orton played awesome anyway.

I think that this game shows that Haley had a lot more to do with the offensive play calling than we all think he did. Cause the game when he loses his job we all of a sudden have offensive production.. I know Orton helped that out a lot, but we were even shredding them with our running game. But if we want to get to the playoffs this year we are going to need to finish drives.

the production is due to Orton as QB. 9 different WRs catchign passes makes the defense back off which helps the running game.
