Waters strongly defends Albert
In case you missed it, Brian Waters talked yesterday about his situation with the Chiefs. Here's the story.
Among other topics from the interview, Waters discussed Branden Albert. The Chiefs have yet to commit publicly to Albert as their left tackle for the long term and may wind up choosing someone to play the position in the first round of the draft. Albert would then be moved to right tackle or guard.
Albert allowed nine sacks last season, the fifth highest total in the league. Here's what Waters had to say about Albert's situation:
''Branden got the worst rap out of anybody on our football team over the last two years. Without a shadow of a doubt, he's a left tackle. Without a shadow of a doubt, he can play football. We have not helped him, to be honest with you, as a football team, as an organization. It's one of the toughest positions to play on the football team . . .
''His position stands out the most because he's always going against one of the best defenders on the football team and some of the best players in the league. We just weren't a very good football team. We didn't run the ball well early in the season. We were always in second-and-long, third-and-long. When you're in those positions, his position is the one that's always going to stick out like a sore thumb.
''This negative tone I've been hearing about him not being able to play tackle, moving to guard . . . Moving him to guard is totally ridiculous, to be honest with you. Moving him to right tackle to me would be the worst thing for him as well because if you draft a tackle up high and bring him in and (move Albert to right tackle), then basically you've got two new guys. You're basically starting him over and then you've also got a rookie. I don't think that would be in the best interest for him and the team as well.''
